Mufti's war against corruption puts babus, netas in tight spot
Next list being prepared, revival of SAC on cards

SRINAGAR, July 7: The Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed upheld his promise of showing door to the corrupt elements within 100 days of his taking over the reins of the state. The government's swift action against the 63 corrupt officials has evoked a mixed response as many people feel that still lot needs to be done to eradicate corruption from the system.
An analyst while talking to Early Times said, "Mufti has kept his word and has made a good beginning. Action against 63 corrupt officials has sent a strong message to the people in the administration that they are being watched and corruption won't be tolerated. It's unfair to say that Mufti has made an half hearted attempt. One needs to appreciate that at least an attempt has been made."
Referring to the "big fishes" escaping the net, the analyst said, "People should not come to conclusion so fast and need to wait and watch. The Chief Minister is a seasoned politician and knows how to play his cards."
An official wishing anonymity said, "Terminating 63 officials is just a beginning and it was a test dose. State agencies are on the job and another list of the corrupt officials is being prepared."
The official said that investigating agencies have been directed to ensure that they prepare water tight cases against the corrupt officials and presently investigations are on to ascertain the exact strength of the assets owned by the bureaucrats and others. "Besides government officials ground is being prepared to take action against then corrupt politicians against whom cases are pending," he added.
The official said, "To begin with the government has decided to revive the State Accountability Commission (SAC) again and the search for its members is on.
Pertinently, the National Conference led Omar Abdullah regime had turned SAC into a toothless tiger and it ceased to function during NC's tenure.
Sources said the Chief Minister has made it clear to his cabinet colleagues that there is no place for corrupt elements in the system and the people who have misused their official and political positions in the past would be dealt with sternly. "Chief Minister recently asked the heads of the State Vigilance Commission and Jammu and Kashmir Crime Branch to expedite the investigation into the pending cases," they added.
An official of the SVO while talking to Early Times said, "Many cases are pending in SVO. If investigation in these cases is expedited many big names would end up in trouble. Since the day new government has taken over it has infused new life into the State Vigilance Organization and it seems things are moving."
Sources said the Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was taking keen interest in "war against corruption" has created ripples in the bureaucratic circles "Many top officials who sued to call the shots during the erstwhile regime are maintaining a low profile these days and are happy to manning insignificant positions as they know that if investigating agencies start dwelling into their past they would be in soup and could figure in the next list," sources added.
