Asiya Andrabi trains guns on ATMs

Early Times Report
Srinagar, July 7: Firebrand separatist leader and chairperson of Dukhtaran-e-Millat, Asiya Andrabi, has trained guns on banks for "asking women to show their faces" while making transactions at ATM counters across the Valley.
After issuing a statement last week, Asiya has started lobbying with other separatists to launch an agitation on the "revised rules for use of bank ATMs."
The banks had to rethink on how consumers use ATM following a startling revelation that some veiled women are making transactions and duping of scores of people.
On June 17, the police succeeded in apprehending one such ATM fraudster who had duped ATM users of their money in Srinagar.
"The lady used to exchange the ATM cards while offering help at the ATM kiosks in Srinagar. Later the lady used to withdraw money from the ATMs, but nobody could recognize her as she used to keep her face covered," said a police official.
He said such complaints were pouring in for many months and that the last one was registered on June 16. On the fateful day police station Sher Garhi registered a complaint from a woman that Rs 40,000 were fraudulently withdrawn from her ATM account. "A case vide FIR No. 44/2015 under section 379/RPC was registered and investigations team headed by SHO Mohammad Issaq utilizing technical and other recourses succeeded in zeroing in on the fraudster lady," the police said.
Police had issued a handout that the accused was found to be keeping her face veiled while making transactions at the ATMs. "As the incident hogged the headlines many bank ATMs started asking woman to keep their faces uncovered while making transactions so that their video footage could be recorded for future reference," said a bank official.
Asked about Asiya's statement, he said, "We have a standard way of working and we can't go by anyone's diktats. It's better to suspend the service than to be unduly vulnerable to threats."
Asiya has been arguing that the move to make women uncover their face for ATM transaction is "a condemnable act aimed to discourage adhering to Islamic dress code." She has asked the burqa-clad women not to pay heed to such an "un-Islamic order."
"After a girl, who was wearing an abaya, was caught while committing a fraud in an ATM booth, there are reports from various areas that the burqa-clad women are prevented from entering ATM booths," she claimed. "This diktat is un-Islamic and unacceptable."
Asiya said that there could be no objection if the burqa-clad women were asked to prove their identity by showing a valid identity card before entering the ATM booth. "But asking them to remove the veil and get her face captured in the camera is unacceptable."
A police official said Asiya's statement has been taken note of. "We're looking into the matter," he said.
