| Budgam villages face shortage of drinking water | | People block Srinagar- Chadoora road for 5 hrs | | Early Times Report
Budgam, July 7: As the Doodh Ganga water supply scheme at Kralapora Budgam is being repaired from the last many months , the authorities have failed to find an alternative for providing drinking water to almost half a dozen villages and semi urban areas of Budgam district in central Kashmir . Residents of Alamdar Colony Gopalpora mostly women held a massive demonstration on Srinagar Chadoora road here against the Public Heath Engineering (PHE) department on Tuesday as the area is undergoing severe water crises from the last more than two weeks now. Reports say Doodh Ganga water supply scheme at Kralapora in Srinagar outskirts is undergoing some repairs from the last two months and that has considerably caused drinking water shortage to many areas like Gopalpora , Kralapora and Wathoora areas of Budgam district " Residents of Gopalpora , Alamdar Colony and other areas are facing serious water crises from the last two weeks and it is a matter of great concern that authorities have not been able to address this problem , that too when people are fasting in the ongoing holy month of Ramadhan " said Bashir Ahmad a local resident of Alamdar Colony As the day temperature has also gone so high , the PHE authorities have failed to find an alternative way to end the water crises in several areas of Budgam. Irony is that officials from civil administration have not come to even pacify the protestors who blocked the Srinagar Chadoora road for five hours on Tuesday. Dozens of protestors mostly women sat on dharna on at Gopalpora and during this protest they raised anti Government slogans . The protestors demanded that drinking water supply be restored to their area without any delay. The protestors demanded that until the water supply is restored to Gopalpora and Alamdar colony the PHE authorities must send several water tankers to the area. Pertinent to mention that last week also residents of Gopalpora protested against the authorities for their lukewarm attitude towards ending drinking water crises in the area and till date the matter has not been resolved. |
