Teachers hold directorate hostage, Director disappears | Weary of corrupt practices in education department | | Abodh Sharma
Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 22: The teachers, masters and the lecturers have run out of patience against the alleged organized syndicate of corruption and nepotism operating in the department of education and the vociferous ventilation of their anger was on open display the previous day when hundreds of teachers of different grades mobbed the directorate of school education and held it hostage for hours. Unprecedented scenes were seen in the directorate as army of teachers paraded into the building and locked the offices, shouting slogans against the director school education Jammu and her blue eyed officials, who according to the protesters were working as touts of the director and milking hapless officials of their hard earned money in the name of transfers. MoS education Priya Sethi was also target of the wrath of the protesting teachers who alleged that the director, Smita Sethi was given free hand to work according to the whims and fancies of her blue eyed official who were running the transfer industry. Ganesh Khajuria, the leader of the J&K teachers forum, led the protesters who after locking all offices, climbed at the roof top of the building and raised slogans against the corruption in the department. Waving red flag, they targeted two teachers posted in the directorate who have been accused of minting huge money for transferring the teachers. "On routine days, the PSOs of the director would not allow an aggrieved teacher to see her, and today, she was informed by her agents of our arrival and she did not turn up" said a protesting teacher. "The director is operating through two teachers who have been attached in her office. They demand money from the poor teachers, who seek legitimate transfers after completing their tenures" he added. It is pertinent to mention that there is huge anguish amongst the teaching community for utter lack of transparency in the education department, including the department of higher education. Despite the tall claims of the Minister and announcement of a transfer policy for teachers, the transfer mafia has been operating right under the nose of the authorities and no cognizance of repeated complaints has been taken. "It is shame that the whistle blowers and victims are targeted while those running the mafia are given lose rope, which itself indicates that the higher officers are also involved," a protesting teacher alleged. |
