When leaders desert PDP, foot soldiers hold the fort
9/22/2016 11:04:15 PM
Early Times Report

Budgam, Sept 22: As the unrest continues in the Valley, political leaders have either taken refuge in Jammu or Delhi or have deserted their respective parties like PDP's senior leader and Srinagar MP Tariq Karra. At this crucial juncture when leaders have gone into hiding, there are some foot soldiers who are holding the fort.
A PDP leader from Charar-e-Sharief constituency is one such person. He was hardly recognized as a leader in the party for many years, but during the ongoing crisis he is the only second line leader of PDP who neither left his village nor deserted the party but instead kept moving and meeting poor and deprived people of his constituency.
In-fact MLA Charar, Ghulam Nabi Lone Hanjoora, who also belongs to the PDP and is a senior Cabinet minister has not visited his constituency in the last 80 days. Even MLAs of Budgam, Khansahib, Beerwah and Chadoora have not been able to move around their respective constituencies since July 8 when Hizb commander Burhan Wani was killed. They have either shifted to Srinagar, Jammu, Delhi or Mumbai. On Thursday, the PDP leader from Charar visited Hufroo, Nilnag, Buzgoo and other villages that were affected by hailstorm on Wednesday. He spoke to a large gathering of people at Buzgoo and people did not even raise their voice against him. The reason is that he is a dedicated political and social activist who keeps meeting people in the hour of grief and keeps a low profile in the area. Charar constituency has been represented by political stalwarts of Kashmir from early 70's, but from last several years this area is suffering a lot on the development front.
"We had lots of hopes from PDP and that is why we voted for Hanjoora. But he has failed to address even the basic problems of people from last two years," said Fayaz Ahmad, a resident of Loolipora,Charar. From 1977 to 2014 Charar was represented by Abdul Rahim Rather who took many initiatives to address the basic issues of the area. But locals say that from seven years the constituency suffered a lot as the Omar Abdullah government didn't pay special attention towards this constituency. It is believed that Rather had not good relations with Omar and that is the reason this constituency suffered a lot. People opted for a change in 2014 assembly elections and they elected Ghulam Nabi Lone of PDP from this area. Lone had been unsuccessfully contesting from Charar from 1996. Locals say that in 2014 there was an anti-incumbency factor visible in Chararand that lad to defeat of Rather.
