JAMMU, Sept 22: Jammu has started witnessing the emergence of civil society groups, particularly in the wake of the unrest that gripped Kashmir after the killing of Burhan Wani on July 8. These civil society groups are discussing the political future of Ladakh vis-à-vis Kashmir and India and have come to the conclusion that it was time for the people of Jammu province to assert their psyche in a more effective way so that their voice reached Delhi's corridors of power and they obtained a dispensation of their own choice that was independent of Kashmir. They want to recreate 2008-like situation in Jammu.
Notwithstanding the fact that these civil society groups are not working in tandem for reasons best known to the activists, the fact remains that they are one as far as their attitude toward Kashmir and New Delhi is concerned. They say that while India attained independence in August 1947, Jammu and Ladakh lost their independence in October the same year.
Their view cannot be dismissed as silly and preposterous. Jammu was the power-centre of the state between March 1846 and October 1947. It was on October 26 that Jammu lost its political power to Kashmir, as the then Indian Prime Minister Nehru involved Sheikh Abdullah in the accession process despite the fact that he had no locus standi in the matter and that Maharaja Hari Singh was the sole authority to decide his state's political future. Nehru not only involved Sheikh Abdullah in the accession business but also forced Maharaja Hari Singh to abdicate his authority in favour of Sheikh Abdullah, who was known for his anti-Jammu, anti-Ladakh and even anti-India views. Sheikh Abdullah became Wazir-e-Azam in 1948 and with his elevation to this position commenced the story of Jammu's and Ladakh's neglect and marginalization.
As for Ladakh, it was happy with the Jammu raj, as its leaders, especially the Head Lama of Ladakh Kushok Bakula, was fully aware of the credentials of Sheikh Abdullah.
Indeed, the situation in Kashmir is alarming and frightening. Alarming and frightening because the Kashmiri jihadis have made it loud and clear that they want separation not only of Kashmir but the entire state of Jammu and Kashmir and their single-point agenda is to establish Islamic rule in the state or Pakistan-like system, that eliminates the minorities. What is all the more disturbing is the fact that all the Kashmiri parties have joined hands against the country and speaking the jihadi language.
The emergence of civil society groups in Jammu needs to be viewed in this context. For, it is the question of Jammu's very survival and existence.
