BRO's Project Beacon suffers loss of Rs 40 crores due to unrest, development projects take a hit | | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Sept 22: Border Roads Organization (BRO) has suffered a loss of Rs 40 crores as the organization has not been able to take up development works on various road projects being carried out under Project Beacon across Kashmir valley. Sources in the organization told Early Times that the ongoing unrest in Kashmir valley has adversely affected the road construction activities of Project Beacon of BRO. Due to the unrest the Project Beacon has suffered loss of working season as well as damage to property, vehicles, plants and equipment. "An estimated loss of 40 crores has been caused on roads of Project Beacon due to slow progress over the past couple of months. The unrest has led to severe losses and it would be very difficult to recoup the losses suffered during this period. In addition, there have been some incidents of damages to property and vehicles during the same period," said sources. Sources said that four laning works on Srinagar-Baramulla-Uri highway scheduled for completion by July 2016 has been delayed. In addition to this handing over of Simthan Pass in South Kashmir's Anantnag district to National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is all set to postponed as the pending work on this road will now go beyond the stipulated time frame of September 30, 2016. "The most affected locations where delay and loss of work has taken place are in Tangdhar, Anantnag, Kupwara and Bandipora areas. Few detachments have been ransacked some beyond rehabilitation have been forced to be closed for the time being. In addition, many vehicles and equipment have been damaged. Non-availability of vehicles and equipment would definitely affect the work and the efficiency of the development projects," said sources. Sources said that loss of more than two months of working season during summers in Kashmir valley is a serious issue considering that the work output is considerably less during winters. The sources added that while steps were initiated to execute work where and whenever possible, but owing to restrictions on movement of vehicles and persons, desired 'progress' could not be made and as a result many appreciated targets will have to be revised. Raised in 1965, Project Beacon has been solely responsible for providing connectivity in Kashmir valley developing roads through most challenging terrain and climatic conditions. Roads across Banihal pass in Jammu division and Zojila in Ladakh region are testimony of the 'grit' and 'determination' of BRO personnel delivering against all odds across the length and breadth of Jammu & Kashmir. |
