UNGA session: J&K not among conflicting zones | Geelani & Co in a state of shock | | Early Times Report jammu, Sept 22: Pakistan and Kashmiri separatists had hoped that United Nations General Secretary Ban ki-Moon would refer to Jammu and Kashmir in his address to the General Assembly but it didn't happen. He did refer to many conflicting zones but he didn't even indirectly referred to Jammu and Kashmir. It is this omission in his address that has rattled both Pakistan and its Kashmir-based agents, including Syed Ali Shah Geelani. Pakistan and Geelani and Co are so rattled by the omission of Jammu and Kashmir in the address of Ban ki-Moon that they expressed their deep concern over the omission. Pakistan Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif and his lobbyists in New York had left no stone unturned to persuade the world leaders to support the Pakistani stand on Jammu and Kashmir, but with no result. They got support only from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and it was expected. On the other hand, UK, USA, Russia, Germany, France, Japan and many other countries didn't share the Pakistani views and, contrarily, directly and indirectly dubbed Pakistan as a terrorist state and held it responsible for the September 18 Uri attack and martyrdom of 19 jawans. In fact, two American lawmakers on September 21 urged Washingtom to designate Pakistan as a terrorist state. Kashmiri separatists and fanatics too had pinned their faith in the UN General Secretary Moon, but he practically snubbed them by not referring to Jammu and Kashmir. Reacting to this omission, Geelani said that the Kashmiri nation was disappointed by this omission. "We had pinned hope that his Excellency (Ban ki-Moon) will make a reference of Kashmir issue during his official speech. It is very shocking that while referring to conflicting zones in world he did not make any mention of Jammu and Kashmir. Kashmir remained a long pending issue and the UNO stands accountable and answerable as to why it ignores and shuts its eyes from this issue which tops the UN agenda since 1947. Despite more than 18 resolutions passed in favour of Kashmir, we as a nation fail to understand why this august house can't fulfil its own commitment," Geelani said in a written statement. The omission of Jammu and Kashmir in the Moon's address could be construed as India's diplomatic victory. But this is not enough. India needs to tell the UN General Assembly at least two things. One, the problem in Kashmir is patently religious and not political. Two, India must confront Pakistan with the August 13, 1948 UN Security Council resolution on Jammu and Kashmir that required Pakistan to vacate the aggression in POJK and Gilgit-Baltistan and recognized the Indian right to send troops to the to-be- vacated areas to maintain law and order there. This is must to deflate Pakistan and puncture its whole sinister anti-India campaign. |
