jammu, Sept 22: The state government appears totally non-serious towards schools located in the rural areas. For example, just three months are left for the annual exam, but there is no lecturer to teach Geography and Computer Science at Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) Gundanain Doda district.
The school, having 700 students on roll, is presently functioning from a 2-room building and one can easily imagine the condition of the school and its students.
Mohd Ayaz, a resident of village Gundanain said, "This school was upgraded in 2007 with sanctioned posts of 14 Lecturers, five Masters, a post each of Librarian, Physical Education and Physical Master.
When the school was upgraded, the post of Principal was not filled. Besides out of 14,there are only two permanent lecturers (for Urdu and Geology) while four posts of master grade and two posts of Physical education are vacant.
"Shortage of permanent lecturers, every year government appoint lecturers on academic arrangement but this year government has failed to appoint two lecturers of Geography and Computer Science due to which hundreds of students studies suffers", he said.
The school has one building block having total four rooms including two classrooms, one principal room and one for laboratory, rest of other classes are running in open sky.
Majid further said that Gundna Higher Secondary School violates all norms of Jammu and Kashmir State Board of School Education (JKBOSE). As per norms, accommodation for each student in classroom from Ist - 12th class shall provide 9 square feet of floor space and the limit of admission of the students to class or section of a class to maximum of 45 students in each class or section of a class where as class comprises more than one section but at GHSS Gundanain has only two classrooms having space10"x10".
"In addition one science laboratory for each science subject for practical work, library cum reading room to accommodate a maximum of 50 students at one time, staff room, principal room and office room but this school has one room for laboratory of all science subjects and Library", he said.
Criticizing current government, another resident said that due to insufficient building infrastructure students' takes lesson in open sky. The school has virtual neglect shown by previous government, which otherwise had concentrated on 'Transfer Industry' rather than prioritizes education. People hoped incumbent government to provide such facilities to these rural schools but this government has nothing done on ground.
"GHSS Gundana have no play ground, students of this school faraway from sports education and other activities", another resident said, adding that Education Minister Nayeem Akhtar and MOS PriyaSethi gave statements in Air condition rooms that they had committed to upgrade, uplift the education sector of state.
"In the rain, we cannot study while in the scorching heat, we have no shelter to protect ourselves from the sun which beats down directly upon us", said Imtyaz, a student of 12th class.
