| Second intrusion bid foiled in week | | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Jan 09:
Just two days after the bloody terror attack at Lal Chowk in Srinagar, heavily armed militants, taking cover of fire by the Pak-Rangers and thick fog, came close to the International Border (IB) in Akhnoor sector early Saturday and opened heavy
volume of fire in a bid to infiltrate into the Indian territory.
This was the first ceasefire violation in the region this year and the third infiltration attempt. The first intrusion bid was foiled by BSF in Ramgarh sub-sector of Samba on January 4.
It was followed by another unsuccessful infiltration bid along the Line of Control (LoC) in Balakote area of Poonch district Friday.
Official sources said the Rangers, in yet another ceasefire violation, fired on the forward Sidharwal Post at Pargwal in Akhnoor at about 4 am to facilitate Pak-based militants to
cross over to this side. Sources said taking cover of the Pak fire, a group of
militants came close to the fencing along the IB and opened fire while making attempts to enter this side of the border.

New Delhi Jan 9: Jan 15 will witness the first annular solar eclipse of the year, also the longest in the millennium, eminent astronomer Ajay Talwar said.
Amateur Astronomers Association talwar told the media: "Not only will this eclipse be the first of the year but also the longest of the third millennium, that is between 2001 and 3000. In India it will start at around 11 a.m. and end at around 3 p.m.
"The eclipse will first be seen in south of Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu and then travel obliquely to Rameshwaram and Dhanushkodi, where it will enjoy the best view. It will then travel to Kerala and end in Mizoram in the northeast," he said.

Amritsar Jan 9: Border Security Force (BSF) troopers fired from machine-guns and automatic weapons after suspected terrorists fired seven rockets into Punjab's Amritsar district but there were no casualties, officials said today.
The rockets were found in an agricultural field near Kangarh chowki (post) in Attari sector early today.
BSF troopers retaliated with machine-gun and automatic weapons into Pakistan from the area where the rocket blasts were heard between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. today.

New Delhi Jan 9: Downplaying the terrorist encounter at Lal Chowk in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Saturday said security forces engaged the militants on the basis of credible intelligence inputs and the incidents did not signify revival of militancy.
"Both the operations were initiated by the security forces and not terrorists. There were credible intelligence information," he told reporters here, contending that the incidents got so much attention only because it took place in Srinagar.

Four persons of a family were feared dead in an avalanche at Yaar Pullar, a remote hamlet on the upper reaches of snow-covered mountains in Padiarna area of Kishtwar Friday.
Police sources said one Mohammad Yousaf of Yaar Padiarna was returning home from the nearby Lotan Dhar village Friday afternoon when a mass of snow and rocks came down rapidly from the wayside mountain and hit him. He was killed on the spot.
