| Azad faction says alliance with NC would be disastrous for Congress | | 2014 elections | | | Rustam
JAMMU, Jan 2: One doesn't really know if the Congress and National Conference (NC) would contest the upcoming Lok Sabha and Assembly elections together or separately. But one thing is becoming clear with each passing day: The Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad-led faction in the Congress party in Jammu and Kashmir is vehemently opposed to the idea of forging any pre-poll alliance with the NC and wants that the Congress must contest the coming elections on its own.
On Tuesday, a number of former Congress Ministers, including former Deputy Chief Minister, sitting MLAs and MLCs and several senior leaders issued a joint statement to demonstrate their opposition to the suggestion that there should be a pre-poll alliance between the Congress and the PDP. The signatories to the statement hailed Azad and AICC president Saif-ud-Din Soz for their suggestion that the Congress would consider the views of the party workers and cadres before taking a final decision in this regard.

Anantnag, Jan 2: Disaster preparedness and tall claims of the administration in South Kashmir stand exposed as the authorities failed to restore inter-district road connectivity.
Pertinent to mention heavy snowfall on December 31 and January 1 had thrown life out of gear in Kashmir.
Reports said that authorities failed to clear snow on all leading roads connecting several rural areas like Kokernag-Anantnag, Verinag-Anantnag, Dooru Shahabad-Anantnag, Khiram Sirhama-Anantnag, Haptnar-Aishmuqam. Srinagar, Jan 2 : After experiencing a good crop last year saffron growers said that the production has reduced to about half this year compared to last year owing to insufficient rainfall and problems in saffron corm.
The farmers said that last year the production of saffron flowers per Kanal was about 15-20 kilogram which has reduced to seven to ten Kilogram this year.
"The land I am having under saffron cultivation is about 30 kanals which on average yielded eight to ten Kilograms of flower production per Kanal which is half the production that the fields yielded last year," said Irshad Ahmad, a resident of Patal Bagh.
