| This summer, Jammu runs through 7 million gallons daily water shortage | | | |
MUNISH GUPTA
Jammu, May 6: The summer has just set in and Jammu city and its suburbs with a population of about 15 lakh have plunged in a scarcity of drinking water. The situation is expected to worsen in the coming days as many of the natural water bodies have already dried.
Tanker-owners are making a fast buck as residents of most of the new colonies skirting the main town are dependent on them for their requirement of drinking water. Many colonies are being supplied drinking water twice a week by the Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department, while some get tap water on alternate days.
With the mercury already crossing the 40°C mark, various areas of Jammu are reeling under severe water scarcity. Though the PHE Department has put on service few water tankers to supply water to the areas facing acute water shortage, residents of various local localities say that the remedial measures taken by the department are not sufficient.
As per official statistics, the Jammu city alone needs 37 millions gallons of water everyday whereas it gets only 30 millions gallons.

NIRBHAY JAMMUAL
People in Jammu and Kashmir may not remember the names of the rivers that flow in the state but they have not forgotten that the state has rich water resources and has identified potential of generating 20,000 MWs of electricity. Why so? It is the result of repeated announcements from the successive state Governments, right from GM Shah to Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and Ghulam Nabi Azad to Omar Abdullah. We have heard them saying that Jammu and Kashmir has the capacity of generating 20,000 MWs of electricity. See the irony. So far a mere 1560 MWs under the central sector and 758.70 MWs under the state sector have been harnessed. If people are likely to suffer the ordeals of po... | |
