| Eight killed in NH mishap | | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, July 7: In yet another ghastly mishap, eight persons were killed on the spot today when an oil tanker rolled down into a deep gorge on Jammu-Srinagar national highway at Chanderkote a mid point between Batote and Ramban about 130 kms from winter capital of the state.
Giving details of accident Superintendent of Police, Ramban, Mubassir Latiffi who was heading the operation told that eight people, including the driver and the conductor traveling in this truck on their way to Srinagar from Jammu died on spot when the vehicle skidded off from the main highway and rolled down into the deep gorge at Chanderkote here today at about 11.40 am. ‘The truck rolled down too deep which even made evacuation operation much difficult, however after strenuous efforts of hrs all the eight bodies have been recovered,’ SP Latiffi, said.

Islamabad, July 07: Indian prisoner on death row Sarabjit Singh has made an emotional appeal to Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari pleading amnesty, so that he could live his "remaining life with his wife and children."
The mercy petition, to be submitted to Zardari tomorrow reads, "I Sarabjit Singh, a prisoner for death, is languishing in jail's dark cell for the last 19 years." "I appeal you in the name of Allah and humanity that kindly pardon me so that whatever months and years I have left with me, I could spent them with my wife and children in my country," Sarabjit said in his petition written in Urdu.

NEW DELHI: The deemed universities have been allowed to remove 'deemed' from
their name and identify themselves as universities, the government said on Tuesday.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has approved the use of the word 'university' by such institutions, minister of state for higher education D Purandeswari told the Rajya Sabha in a written reply.
The decision was taken following a recommendation in this regard by a committee comprising heads of UGC and All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) and a former secretary of higher education.

Jammu, July 7: Ruling out any immediate withdrawal of CRPF from Jammu and Kashmir, state Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today said before considering any such step the state police has to be augmented in numbers, equipment and levels of training.
Abdullah, who had meetings with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Home Minister P. Chidambaram in New Delhi yesterday, said he had raised the issue of withdrawal of the controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in a phased manner.

Srinagar, July 7, 2009: The CRPF deployed for counter-insurgency duties in Jammu and Kashmir have complained of attempts being made to target them exposing its jawans to maximum risk during its fight against militancy.
A senior CRPF official has written to para-military headquarters detailing how some elements were trying to target the jawans of the force especially in North Kashmir, official sources said on Tuesday.

Srinagar, July 7: As many as 51 truck loads of merchandise crossed sides along the line of control in uri town of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, offices said.
