| Patriotic Fervour, Festivities fail to bring salaries for staff | | | | Early Times Special
JAMMU, August 14: August was keenly awaited in Jammu and Kashmir as a month of patriotic fervor, religious festivals and time for realization of long standing commitments –particularly salaries and other dues of employees. On the eve of Independence Day, half of the month is over but commitments are yet to be met.
On August 5, it was Raksha Bandhan or Rakhi, a Hindu festival celebrated across India as a day which marks the eternal love between brothers and sisters. As part of the festivities, sisters tie a sacred thread around the wrist on the right arm of their brothers after pooja in an auspicious muhurat.
In turn, brothers solemnly pledge to protect the sisters throughout their lives. Sweets are prepared at homes and then shared with relatives and neighbours. Kite flying has become an integral part of the revelries for the last several decades on this occasion.

| Vigilance medal for Mushtaq, Makhdoomi | | | | Early Times Report
Sriangar, August 14: The Government has sanctioned award of Chief Minister’s Vigilance Medal in favour of two officers for displaying conspicuous and exemplary courage in exposing corruption and creating awareness against corrupt practices for the year 2009.
The officers include Sheikh Mushtaq Ahmad presently Deputy Commissioner, Anantnag, in his capacity as Deputy Commissioner, Bandipora and Muzaffar Hussain Makhdoomi, Executive J&K Bank Limited, who is presently posted at Zonal Headquarters, Srinagar, in his capacity as Associate Executive, J&K Bank Limited, Chadoora Branch.
Each of the awardees will be presented a Medal, cash award of Rs 51,000 and a certificate.... | |

Jammu, Aug 14: Two tourists, who had reached Srinagar from South India recently, tested positive for swine flu even as authorities in Jammu and Kashmir have sent samples of 43 patients for testing of the deadly virus.
"The tests of the tourists who had arrived here either from Karnataka or Andhra Pradesh, were positive. But they went back to their native state before their reports reached us", state Health Minister Sham Lal Sharma said today.
He said blood samples of both the tourists were collected at the Srinagar airport after they had shown symptoms of swine flu. The samples were sent to National Institute of Communicable Diseases where they tested positive.
