Jammu still ready to do more for rights
9/1/2008 12:18:12 AM
Early Times Reporter Jammu | Aug 31 The City of Temples has always been considered by the naïve as a sleeping down and rest of Jammu region as an abode of politically unconscious minds. Perhaps now is the time that the people not only in other parts of this state but also in the country reframe their opinion as people of Jammu have made it known to the all that they cant be taken for granted, any more. Now when the agitation has been called off, a loss to the economy of Jammu has been roughly calculated at Rs 10,000 Crores suffered during shutdowns and curfews over past two months. This is not the only cost. At least eleven brave hearts offered their life for the cause –either at their own or to the bullets. Jammu has paid a heavy price for this initial victory but the region has clearly asserted that it is ready to still farther in its struggle for the just and genuine rights. In the later half of June, protests erupted in Kashmir Valley following inept handling of the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board land transfer issue. Jammu watched the developments with keen interest but not...

A pact, which looks forward
9/1/2008 12:17:39 AM
Early Times Reporter Jammu | Aug 31 Seen as a victory of the people of Jammu region, the resolution of ongoing crises on Shri Amarnath Shrine land transfer controversy seems to have become possible only after a pragmatic approach of both the state government and the representatives of Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti as the final agreement is a forward looking document and not just a “time buying deal”. Avoiding any verbal jugglery which could have posed problems at some stage, the agreement says that the the State Government shall set aside for the use by Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board, exclusively, the land in Baltal and Domail (Compartment No. 63/S, Sindh Forest Division) compris...

9/1/2008 12:17:21 AM
Early Times Reporter Srinagar | Aug 31 Authorities moved in quickly to re-impose curfew in a few places in the Kashmir Valley on Sunday after protests erupted against the State government's decision to give the Amarnath temple trust exclusive rights over a controversial piece of land during the two-month pilgrimage period. In the Mahrajgunj area of the city, curfew was re-imposed within hours of it being lifted after protests broke out. One person was injured as security forces clashed with the protesters during the curfew relaxation period. "Curfew relaxation was withdrawn and re-imposed in the area immediately as violent protests erupted," a police official said in Srinagar. In ...

After protests, Celebrations rock City
9/1/2008 12:16:54 AM
Early Times Reporter Jammu | Aug 31 Jammu has a secular tradition of celebrating all religious festivals together –Diwali, Eid, Gurupurb, Christmas –all see the town painted in festive colours but never in the history of this City –and many other parts of region –celebrations have been seen at a note the way town is witnessing since wee hours of this morning. By around 2 AM past last midnight when some national news channels beamed the unconfirmed reports, attributed to the sources, that 800 kanals of land in Baltal and Domail in Kashmir has been agreed by the government to be put at the disposal of Shri Amarnath Shrine Board, the town immediately burst into a festive mode. Fire crack...

Dialogue on separatists issues impossible
9/1/2008 12:16:30 AM
Nirbhay Jammual The PDP patron,Mufti Mohd.Sayeed, has suggested to the Government of India to initiate talks with the coordination committee constituted by the Kashmir separatists on the same pattern that it followed in holding talks with the committee constituted by the Amarnath Sangarsh Samiti. He is oppoed to unilateral dialogue with the Samiti leaders and does not favour any compromise on the land row.The Mufti is right as far as taking leaders of both the regions into confidence for defusing the turmoil and tension. He is not wrong when he says the centre should hold talks with the separatists, including the Hurriyat Conference leaders. What the Mufti has suggested seems to be simple i...

SC widens debt waiver ambit for Kashmir
9/1/2008 12:15:26 AM
New Delhi | Aug 31 Militancy changes many things, even the concept of a debt waiver scheme that was announced in 1997 for small entrepreneurs in militancy-hit J&K. The scheme, as originally envisaged, was meant to waive loans up to Rs 50,000 taken by those engaged in tourism, transport, trade, hotel, houseboat business and retail trade. However, the Supreme Court on Friday gave a liberal interpretation to the scheme and extended the loan waiver facility to those who had taken money from banks for purchase of buffaloes and sheep. The moot question raised before the apex court by the J&K Rural Bank was — could the HC have taken such a liberal view to count purchase of buffaloes and rear...
