| Worried farmers demand immediate construction of canal | | Paddy fields await irrigation facility | | Early Times Report
Doda, Sept 28: Thousands kanals of paddy fields in Bhella Panchayat, just 16 km away from Doda city, is facing shortage of irrigation water from the last one year as the facility had got damaged last year. Expressing concern, farmers of the area said this year they had to sow maize instead of rice in their fields as irrigation canal was damaged. "We approached administration and Irrigation department officials several times but all in vain. The damage to the canal has badly affected the growth of paddy crop this year," they told Early Times. Ashok Kumar, a farmer said the department is doing nothing to increase the flow of water in irrigation streams of Bhella. He alleged that for past few years the Irrigation department has not de-weeded or de-silted the irrigation canals and streams leading to the decline of water level. "Thousands kanals of paddy fields depend on these canals for irrigation water in the area," he said. Another farmer Jamal Din Bhat said that the plantation of paddy crop had delayed in whole adjoining area of Bhella due to the shortage of irrigation water. "Shortage of irrigation water could lead to delay in plantation of paddy. We appeal to the department to take measures to construct water canal to increase the flow of water in streams," he appealed. Somi Raj Parihar, a farmer from lower Bhella demanded suitable compensation to farmers. Meanwhile, the seedling-nursery fields have dried up in the villages due to water shortage. "Our livelihood depends on agriculture. If our fields don't receive irrigation it will lead to heavy loss of crops in coming years," the farmers said. |
