JK Govt sleeps over `acid sale' law
9/28/2013 9:56:52 PM
Early Times Report

JAMMU, Sept 28 : The rampant sale of acid is still on in the open market in the city as state government is yet to restrict the sale of acid and has not taken some strict measures against this ongoing process which can prove deadly for female population as in the past various cases have been reported when females have been targeted to such horrifying attacks by many people.
At this moment, there are no strict laws against the sale of acid in Jammu even after the Supreme Court banned the over the counter sale of acid at retail stores in market across the country.
The state government should take immediate steps in this regard so that the people do not get a chance of acid throwing and females can feel secured. Acid burn is an extreme form of violence that harms victims both physically and psychologically and in the past there have been several cases of acid throwing in the city. An incident was reported from R.S. Pura in recent past where a discontented Special Police Officer (SPO) Sanjeev Kumar had thrown acid on the girl Ruman Lata on May 26 last year because she had refused his immoral advances. Ruman Lata, acid victim said, "I was just 17 years old when this incident of acid attack happened with me. It was a total nightmare for me. I just rejected the marriage proposal of that SPO, Sanjeev Kumar and in anger and frustration he threw acid on my face. That acid attack changed my whole life. I suffered severe burn injuries on my face and arm in the attack. I request the state government to restrict the sale of acid as soon as possible so that the other girls do not suffer the same which I have suffered."It is pertinent to mention here as per the order passed by the apex court, the acid buyers will now have to show their identity proofs, telephone number, residential address and besides that they have to mention the reason for buying acid whether they are purchasing it for household use or for some other meaningful purpose. The authorities said, "We are yet to get any directions regarding this from the state government. This law is yet to implement in the state and when we will get the certain guidelines regarding the restriction on sale of acid from the government we will then act according to it."
