Sources told Early Times that the leaders of eight political parties who met here earlier this week are contemplating to hold two grand conventions at Srinagar and Jammu to formally launch the Third Front which according to the observers would play a very crucial role in Government formation in Jammu and Kashmir after the elections which have been throwing a hung Assembly since 2002. The leaders of the Front, comprising the CPM, People's Democratic Front, ANC, SP, LJP and others, held a three-hour meeting recently and decided to launch the Third Front as an "alternative to the conventional political parties National Conference and People’s Democratic Party. Sources said the meeting was presided by CPM leader Mohammad Yusuf Tarigami and People's Democratic Front president Hakim Mohammad Yasin- both lawmakers in J&K Assembly. If sources are to be believed that leaders during the meetings felt that there was a dire need to have a credible, forceful and a democratic alternative which will not be only versatile in its composition but will have a unique political and socio-economic agenda. The development is viewed as important given the present political situation in the State. "The State is facing political uncertainty and we feel that political parties, civil society groups and youth should come forward so that in due course of time, an alternative option evolves on the political map of J&K," said Tarigami. He said there was an immediate need for the parties to find a "common ground" for working together. "Of course electoral process is important," he said. He said they would hold two conventions -- in Srinagar and Jammu -- for which the dates would be announced soon. Sources also said that many influential leaders from the two main regional parties are also in touch and might possibly join the front. If sources are to believed former Minister and Chairman People’s Democratic Front (PDF) Hakim Mohammad Yasin, former MP Abdul Rashid Kabuli and State President Samajwadi Party Sheikh Abdul Rehman have been holding rounds of meetings during last few days whereas many other leaders are also according to sources being lined up for the meetings. |
