Media Entrepreneur Annurag Batra buys Businessworld from ABP
et report
JAMMU, Sept 28: Media behemoth ABP Pvt Ltd has sold its business magazine 'Businessworld' to Annurag Batra of exchange4media group and investment banker Vikram Jhunjhunwala, in what could be the first instance of a portal buying a print magazine in India.
Businessworld is one of the oldest as well as most respected business publications in the country. It was born in 1981, and over the past three decades, it has become known for its rigorously reported and deeply analysed reports and articles on the economy, banking, finance, industries, corporate houses and entrepreneurs. It has become an essential decision making tool for leaders both in the government as well as in corporate houses. The biggest strength of Businessworld has been its ability to spot trends early and focus on the opportunities and sometimes threats it throws up for the Indian economy as well as the corporate sector.
Confirming the acquisition, Annurag Batra said, "I have some obvious things to do like strengthening the Businessworld print business, increasing number of advertising pages, keeping the editorial product intact and expanding 360 degree. The first step, however, will be to make it digital in next two years and build on its equity. To achieve the goal we shall apply the big data and digital rules to the Businessworld business and focus on practicing what the brand and magazine profess. Face to Face business events, subscription and marketing will be other dimensions. We are in it for the long haul," and added, "Businessworld already has a top-grade editorial team and a few tweaks in content and packaging could help it shore up the offering."
The Businessworld acquisition clearly propels Annurag to a different league of media-owners. From being a Chairman and Editor-in-Chief of a B2B media group he is now the man spearheading one of India's best known and respected media brands.
Annurag Batra, an engineer in the Computer Sciences stream and an MBA by education, started working in the real estate sector and then with ad agency JWT (then HTA), is a first generation entrepreneur who owns premier portals exchange4media, samachar4media and print magazines Impact, Pitch, Realty Plus and Franchise Plus. Batra has recently acquired a digital marketing portal in Singapore.
The Indian business magazine market is estimated at Rs 100 crore. Industry data show magazines' readership stands at 83 million, while business magazines have a readership of 3.63 million.
Annurag Batra has built a business largely focused on the advertising and marketing industry with publishers and broadcasters as his primary source of revenue, and Businessworld, as a brand, gives him access to a wider set of businesses to cover, and a potentially wider base of advertisers. It is obvious that Businessworld is going to have an interesting future and Batra and his team will be able to adapt the business to the changing environment.
