After launching personal attacks, BJP blames NC, PDP for 'political terrorism' | Boycott days over, battle for JK turns murkier | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Dec 1: As the battle for Jammu and Kashmir is heating up, political parties are leaving no opportunity to score points over each other. Allegations and counter accusations have become order of the day. The first phase of the assembly polls witnessing huge voter turnout seems to have made all the parties believe that people hold the key and boycott days are over. The Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the first person to change the discourse of the election campaigning in Jammu and Kashmir. Modi in his first election rally in Jammu's Kishtwar region launched a scathing attack on National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party and called both the parties "corrupt" and alleged that they have "looted" JK. He urged people to vote for a change and to get rid of the Family Raaj in Jammu and Kashmir. Taking cue from Modi, the second rung BJP leaders trained their guns at regional parties and dumped their favorite slogan to abrogate Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir. The BJP leaders in Jammu even issued Aarop Patra to highlight the failures of present NC-Cong regime. The party targeted the Roshini scheme which gave ownership rights to farmers. The BJP alleged that the scheme was devised to benefit the land mafia in the state. Soon after Modi blamed Family Raaj for the poor development in the state the Chief Minister and the National Conference working President Omar Abdullah hit back tactfully at BJP by targeting the separatist turned mainstream politician Sajad Gani Lone, who had met the Prime Minister Modi in New Delhi last month. Omar alleged that BJP is out to do away with the Muslim Personal Law, abrogate Article 370 and to inflict irreparable damage on JK's State Subject Law which "protects" JK's demographic and cultural character. He called Sajad as BJP's "stooge" and cautioned the people about what he said his "nefarious designs." Sajad took no time to react alleging, "Most members of Abdullah family have married in non-Muslim families and by that logic they are neither Muslims and nor have any faith." During the past few days blame game has turned murkier and politicians are firm on their belief that they can cause immense damage to each other by launching personal attacks. The BJP State vice-president Ramesh Arora today gave another twist to the prevailing situation in Kashmir by coining a new term "political terrorism." Arora while addressing a news conference in Srinagar blamed the regional parties for the recent grenade attack at Lal Chowk and a killing of a Sarpanch in south Kashmir's Shopian district on Sunday evening. He appealed the Election Commission of India to probe both the incidents. An analyst while talking to Early Times described the recent blame game as a ploy to woo the voters aimed at making them believe that anything is possible in the strife torn Jammu and Kashmir. "Political parties have realized that boycott days are over and if they have to come into power then they have to strike a chord with people. This time around handful of voters are not going to decide the fate of candidates, competition is tough," he said. The analyst said the high voter turnout in the first phase of the assembly elections is making the BJP believe that it has got an outside chance that's why it's trying to appease the people in Kashmir by distancing itself from Article 370 and by promising that it would revoke Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from Jammu and Kashmir. |
