After peaceful first phase, polling JK Police expect violence | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Dec 1 : After massive polling during the first phase of elections, the local police expect violence in the run up to remaining phases. The DGP's statement issued on Sunday has been taken seriously by all the concerned. The state police chief K Rajendra Kumar on Sunday said that "anti-national elements" and militant outfits would try to disrupt the ongoing Assembly polls in the state. While reviewing the security arrangements for the second phase of polls, Kumar said that the police and other security agencies were ready to foil any such attempt. "Anti-national elements will try to fulfil their nefarious designs but the police along with other security agencies are ready to foil their attempts, so that people can exercise their franchise in a peaceful atmosphere," he said. While the DGP's office was writing the statement, a Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP) electioneering party was attacked near Eidgah in downtown Srinagar. Angry youth pelted stones on the party forcing the workers to run for their lives. Last week, the Maisuma youth attacked an election party when a candidate was returning after filing nomination papers. The police used force to chase away the stone pelting youth. Around sixty kilometers from the summer capital, a National Conference Sarpanch was shot dead by unidentified persons Sunday at Shopian. According to the police, the Sarpanch identified as Muhammad Sultan Bhat was shot from point blank range. Last week (Saturday) a grenade was lobbed at a CRPF picket in LalChowk. The grenade missed the intended target but caused injuries to a CRPF man and seven civilians including two of a family. This was the first grenade attack in LalChowk after four years. Pertinent to mention, the militants did not enforce election boycott in 2008. The polls were, by and large, violence free. The National Conference patron, DrFarooq Abdullah thanked Pakistan and the militants for "allowing fair and violence free elections". Surprisingly, DrFarooq's statement was ignored by New Delhi. The first phase of polling was also violence free and witnessed massive participation of the people. It is widely believed that the heavy turnout has irked some quarters. The DGP's statement has been perceived as a response to apprehension of violence during the coming phases. |
