Fate of 3 coalition ministers set to be sealed as second phase of assembly polls to be held today

SRINAGAR, Dec 1: Fate of three ministers of the present coalition dispensation in the state would be decided on Tuesday when the people would cast their votes in the second phase of five phase assembly elections that got underway on November 25.
While nine assembly seats would go to polls in Kashmir voting for same number of seats would be conducted in Jammu division. More than 15 lakh voters are eligible to vote during the assembly elections in the second phase. More than 2100 polling booths have been set up across the state for the polling on Tuesday.
In the Kashmir valley polling would be held in Karnah, Kupwara, Handwara, Langate and Lolab constituencies of Kupwara district in North Kashmir. At the same time eligible voters of Kulgam, Devsar, Noorabad and Home Shalibugh constituencies of Kulgam district in South Kashmir would also decide about their political future. Fate of Consumer Affairs & Public Distribution (CAPD) Minister, Chaudhary Mohammad Ramzan, Law & Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Mir Saifullah and Social Welfare Minister, SakinaI too would be sealed on Tuesday.
While Ramzan is locked in an intense battle with Sajad Lone of Peoples Conference from Handwara, Saifullah is facing tremendous challenge from candidates of Peoples Conference and Peoples Democratic Party from Kupwara constituency. At the same time Sakina is up against great challenge from Abdul MajidPaddar of Peoples Democratic Party for the Noorabad constituency in Kulgam district.
Veteran communist leader and senior politician Mohammad Yusuf Tarigami is seeking re-election for the fourth time from Kulgam assembly seat. However, Tarigami is facing serious challenge from Bashir Ahmad Laway of Peoples Democratic Party and Imran Nabi Dar of National Conference.
Legislators of Peoples Democratic Party like Mohammad SartajMadni, Abdul GaffarSofi and Abdul Haq Khan would also seek re-election from the Devsar, Home Shalibugh and Lolab assembly seats in the Kashmir valley during Tuesday's polling. Fate of AwamiItihaad Party (AIP) President, Engineer Abdul Rashid would also be decided during the second phase of polling since he is seeking re-election from Langate assembly seat in Kupwara district.
Security has been beefed up across Kashmir more so in the areas where the polling is going to be held on Tuesday. Elaborate security arrangements have been made to ensure that day passes off peacefully and no untoward incident takes place. The killing of a Sarpanch at Nazneenpora, Shopian on Sunday night has forced the police and security agencies to take extra measures on the security front. Meanwhile reports from Kupwara said that in the second phase of assembly elections 51 candidates in the fray from the five seats of Kupwara district of North Kashmir. 531 polling stations have been established in the five assembly constituencies of the district for free, fair and smooth conduct of elections.
Poll campaign in this district witnessed a large participation by the supporters of various parties and their candidates as party flags, banners and buntings dotted the rural areas where the voters are expected to come out in large numbers to choose their representatives.
Main regional parties in state like National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are locked in an interesting battle with Peoples Conference (PC). BharatiyaJanta Party (BJP) has supported Peoples Conference in Kupwara district of North Kashmir and the Congress party too is giving the polls their best shot.
Thousands of police and security forces personnel along with hundreds of poll officials started reaching polling stations in five assembly constituencies of Kupwara district where voting would be held on Tuesday.
Senior district officials said that 613 EVMs have been installed and the Election Commission has arranged video graphing for 10 polling stations whereas there are also 12 model polling stations in the second phase.
