Security beefed up after sarpanch’s killing | | | Muhammad Mukaram

Srnagar, Dec 1: A day after a sarpanch was killed by suspected militants during the late hours of Sunday evening in Nazneenpora area in Shopian, security has been beefed up across the valley to avoid the any such untoward incident ahead of second phase of assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir." A National Conference sarpanch, Mohammad Sultan Bhat, son of Abdul Rehman, 38-year-old was shot dead after suspected militants stopped his car and shot him while he was on his way to residence in Nazneenpora at around 9:30 PM. Bhat died before being shifted to a medical facility," top Police official said. However, top police official source told Early Times that after the killing of sarpanch, the security in entire valley including the volatile areas has been increased with the deployment of large number of police personnel and CRPF forces on the roads. Police and paramilitary forces have been deployed in strength and are conducting random checking of vehicles both commercial and the private ones at dozens of places in most parts of the valley. "The administration is trying to conduct fair and error free elections. We will ensure the law and order is maintained in the valley on the 2nd phase of polling. The police will be assisted paramilitary CRPF in maintaining normalcy," Police Source added.According to reports an additional 220 companies of paramilitary security personnel have been deployed to help the existing CRPF and JK Police to provide security to voters and polling venues for the second phase of polling tomorrow in two districts of the valley.The increased paramilitary presence comes after militants shot dead a National Conference sarpanch Mohammad Sultan Bhat in Shopian district on Sunday night. Although Shopian is not going to polls on Tuesday, it shares its boundary with the Kulgam district where polling is to be held. However, ahead of assembly elections banned militant group Hizbul Mujahideen posters were seen pasted on the walls of many Mosques and on poles warning the people to remain far away from polls or face dire consequences in the many districts in South Kashmir. The security grid is fully geared up to foil any attempts made by militants to disrupt the democratic process. As many as 18 assembly segments, spread over five districts -two in the valley and three in the Jammu region will go to polls on Tuesday to decide the fate of 175 candidates which includes SakinaIttoo, deputy speaker Sartaj Madnin, four ministers and 11 other sitting MLAs. |
