On eve of polls in Kupwara, Army chief pays visit to border district
Visits forward posts, interacts with commanders

SRINAGAR, Dec 1: With the assembly elections in frontier district of Kupwara all set to be held on Tuesday, Chief of Army Staff, General Dalbir Singh Suhag visited some of the forward posts in Tangdhar and Machil sectors of this border district.
The Chief of Army Staff arrived on a visit to review the overall security situation in the valley. He was briefed by the senior army officials about the overall security scenario in the Kashmir valley. The counter infiltration grid put in place by the army near the Line of Control (LoC) also came up for discussion between the General Suhag and the senior army officials.
Visit of Chief of Army Staff to the Kashmir valley assumes significance more so in the backdrop of recent firing in the Arnia sector in Jammu and also holding of the assembly elections in the state. He in the discussion with the army officials stressed upon the need for a close synergy between the Jammu & Kashmir Police, central para-military forces and the army.
A defence spokesman said that Chief of Army Staff visited the forward posts in the Tangdhar and Machil sectors and the Dagger Division at Baramulla. He said on arrival at Srinagar General Suhag was received by Lt Gen DS Hooda, Northern Army Commander and Lt Gen SubrataSaha, Chinar Corps Commander.
"The Army Chief visited the forward posts in Tangdhar and Machil sectors and also visited the Dagger Division Headquarters at Baramulla. The army chief was briefed by the commanders in the field about the situation along the Line of Control and the hinterland.
He was also apprised in detail about the robust counter infiltration grid," said the defence spokesman.
The defence spokesman said that General Suhag appreciated the effectiveness of the grid and the much higher success rate this year in neutralizing infiltration attempts, which had contributed significantly towards ensuring a secure environment in Kashmir. He said the army chief inspected the recoveries of weapons, IEDs and caches.
"The army chief complimented the commanders on the high level of integration achieved with the JKP and CAPF's and expressed his satisfaction with the efforts put in for resource mobilization, innovative surveillance techniques and other security measures which were showing excellent results. He also interacted with the troops and expressed his happiness at the high state of morale and operational preparedness displayed by them," said the defence spokesman.
