Father, child killed in fatal accident, wife serious | Irate residents block Akhnoor road demand arrest of maruti driver | | JAMMU, Aug 26 : The irate residents of Kothian Netar Barnai held a demonstration and blocked Jammu Akhnoor road for over one hour this afternoon at Barnai Chowk in protest against the failure of police to arrest the driver of maruti which hit a scooter near Muthi bridge yesterday and killing father and child duo on spot and inflicting serious injuries to the mother of the child who were travelling on the two wheeler. The irate people including men, women and children along with dead bodies of father child duo squatted on the road at Barnai Chowk and did not allow any vehicle to move. There was a huge jam of traffic up to two kilometres with protestors raising slogans against the police and administration. They demanded immediate arrest of the car borne youth who reportedly were dead drunk. The impact of the accident was so that the child was thrown into canal after the two wheeler was hit by car while his father died on spot and mother received serious injuries. The youth fled from the spot leaving the car behind. Later Damana Police seized the vehicle. The dead bodies were shifted to GMC for post-mortem while the woman is undergoing treatment at GMC. Her condition is also stated to be critical. The dead bodies were handed over to the family today. The incident spread shock waves around with people from Muthi , Barnai, Kothian Netar, Patoli and Gurah Keran staging a protest and blocking the Akhnoor road. The protestors who demanded immediate arrest of the driver of the car also alleged that the police was trying to hush up the case. Though SHO Damana and SDPO Damana reached the spot and requested the people to lift the road blockade as the driver of the car will be arrested soon but they did not budge. Later SP Rural, Mohan Lal Kaith reached the spot and assured the protestors to take the dead bodies for cremation as police will arrest the driver by evening. He said they have seized the documents of the car and soon they will locate its owner and arrest the driver who committed the accident. The protestors also accused the Traffic Police for the increasing accidents in Jammu saying that due to their callousness the number of accidents is increasing. They said failure of Traffic Police to take action against the teenagers driving vehicles rashly under the influence of liquor has been main cause of increasing accidents. The protestors also warned to launch agitation against the traffic police who except taking hafta from drivers are doing no service to the State. |
