Mehbooba, Beig predict a doom for NC, Cong
2014 - Assembly elections

JAMMU, Aug 26: PDP president and MP Mehbooba Mufti and her colleague in the Lok Sabha and former deputy Chief Minister Muzzaffar Hussain Beig are expressing identical views as far as the political future of their party and the NC, the Congress and the BJP is concerned. They are singing the same song during the speeches they deliver in different parts of the Valley and telling the Kashmiri people that the fate of the ruling coalition comprising the NC and the Congress stands totally sealed and the upcoming assembly election would a bipolar contest between the PDP and the BJP.
The PDP leaders are, of course, critical of the BJP and accuse it of “trying to disintegrate the state and divide it on communal lines for electoral gains”, but, at the same time, acknowledge that the BJP has become a force to reckon with. Beig said it last week and Mehbooba Mufti on Monday while addressing a series of roadside rallies in Dooru Assembly segment in the erstwhile Anantnag district (Kashmir). “It would be a PDP v/s BJP contest in the upcoming Assembly elections. The Congress has become very weak at the national level and at the state level too, the wrong policies of National Conference (NC)-Congress coalition government won’t go in their favor.
The Congress’ coalition with NC has been marked by mis-governance, corruption and unemployment. I fear BJP…may emerge as the largest opposition in the state,” she, inter-alia, said. It will be the PDP v/s the BJP all the way, she emphatically said, thus indicating the direction in which the political wind is blowing in the state, which is destined to witness a very interesting electoral exercise in November-December. Mehbooba Mufti and Muzzaffar Beig need to be appreciated for their objective assessment of the political situation, as also for their frank admission that the BJP is no longer untouchable in the state and that it is one of the two major political players in the sensitive border state. While what the PDP leaders have been saying is helping the BJP both directly and indirectly, their assertions have been further demoralizing the already rather demoralized and divided NC and the Congress leadership. Besides, the manner in which some top NC and Congress leaders have been conducting themselves is also spoiling the electoral chances of the NC and the Congress. For example, the failure of the NC poll managers to find a “safe” seat for Omar Abdullah and their decision to not field Farooq Abdullah and the statement of the so-called tallest Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad that he will not contest the assembly election have all worked against their respective parties and lowered the morale of their workers, cadres and supporters. In any case, what Mehbooba Mufti and Beig are saying appears to be correct and based on the ground realities.
