Girl players forced to change in open, administration unmindful | Changing in open is common in sports: Sports officer | | Shiv Thakur JAMMU, Aug 26: Despite exhibiting wonderful performance in the recently held state level competition at Bandipora, Kashmir, the girl volleyball team of Jammu district is still craving for basic infrastructure. While the volleyball players are sweating hard to vie for various state and national level competitions, the concerned sports authorities are oblivious in providing basic facility of changing-room for girls, thus forcing girl players to change in open. "We often practice for several hours at the volleyball court of M A stadium for the upcoming tournaments, but unfortunately we have no separate change-room, which causes great inconvenience to the players," said a player, wishing anonymity. She said that the common change room is also located far away from the court, which at times becomes tiring for a player to reach and also consumes time. Scores of players also maintained that due to absence of separate change-room, they are prone to the risk of "sexual assault". "At times we finish our practice in late hours and the distance of change room from the court adds to our worries of risk," she added. Admitting that the absence of separate change room puts girl players in a great inconvenience, Volleyball coach said that proper infrastructure, especially for girls is must to boost their morale as well as to keep sports persons secure. He said that the concerned authorities also do not comply with the orders of the Minister of Sports Raman Bhalla, who had recently announced separate changing-room for girls. However, mocking the urgency of a separate change-room for girls, Sports Officer, Rajan Sharma said "boys also change in open, this is something very common in sports." He said sports department is providing common change room, girls can also use that. When asked about the commitment made by Raman Bhalla about the urgent construction of change-room for girls, he said "This project will be taken along with other projects, for which Rs 100 cr is sanctioned to Sports Department and it will take time to initiate such major projects," he maintained. |
