Failed tourist season worries stake holders | | | Shakeel A Khan
SRINAGAR, Aug 26: The current year hasn't been encouraging for the people associated with the Tourism Industry. The hustle and bustle that was seen at the tourist spots till yesterday is now missing because the tourists have opted for the early exit from the valley giving anxious moments to the tourist players. It appears as if the activities have come to halt once the Amarnath pilgrimage was over. Admitting that this year's tourist season has virtually been a failure, an official from the tourism department said that only a handful of the tourists have visited the valley after the Amarnath Yatra came to an end. This particular fact has given the sleepless nights to the owners of the house boats and hotels because this development has the direct bearing on their business. It is only about the local tourists who maintained the decorum of the tourist spots of the valley but still then it is not helping the cause of the house boats and the hotel owners because hardly any tourist from abroad or from outside the state visits valley these days who would have stayed in these house boats and hotels. "We are sitting idle these days because the early return of the tourists from the valley has rendered the people associated with the tourism industry jobless. It is a worrisome factor as we will be left unemployed till the next tourist season starts in the valley. The government hasn't put in place adequate measures to attract the tourists round the year," said Pervaiz Ahmad, a tourism player from Srinagar. As per Pervaiz , it is not only about the tourists who visited the valley in lesser number this year, it is about the Amarnath pilgrims also whose number wasn't as encouraging as compared to the number of pilgrims who visited the valley last year. This particular phenomenon, as Pervaiz said, has pricked the balloon of much talked tourism in Kashmir and as a result of this the poor people have suffered a lot. The hotel owners and the employees say that it wasn't healthy rush of the tourists this year. Secondly, as these people say that most of the visitors vacated their hotels prior to the 15th August and on account of this the tourist spots of the valley have lost the glory too much early much to the dejection of the people associated with the tourism industry. When an official of the tourism department was talked to about this problem, wishing anonymity he said that "it is not the fact that the tourists didn't visit the valley but what has affected the tourism industry this year is that the tourists have cut short their visit who otherwise would stay in the valley till the ending September,". |
