Orchardists ridicule Agriculture Minister for wrong information | `Thousands of crores have been lost to sub-standard fertilizers' | | Javaid Naikoo
Srinagar, Aug 26 : Terming the information given in reply to a query asked in the on going assembly session today about measures taken by government to curb sale of substandard pesticides ,orchardists said that government is responsible for decline in apple production over the years. In reply to questions of CPIM state secretary and MLA Kulgam, M.Y Tarigami about decline in apple production and measures taken by government to control sale and purchase of substandard pesticides and fertilizers, concerned Ministers informed house that 'In Kashmir division the damage caused due to hail storm/natural calamities during current financial year was severe in Baramullah more than 50%, Shopian 50-60%,Kulgam:60-70 %, Anantnag 40-50% and Budgam:55% and added in Kulgam damage report of the said zones has been submitted to District Development Commissioners by Chief Horticulture Officer, Kulgam vide his letter No.CHO/ Kul/ Dev/ 2013-14/ 1033 dated 19-08-2014 and the compensation/relief shall be paid as per provisions of natural calamity relief fund (NCRF) by Revenue Department. However lashing on concerned Ministers for disseminating wrong information in the House, president fruit growers association Sopore,Fayaz Ahmad Malik said that loss to apple production which occurred very recently due to hail strorm is more than 70% and contrary to the figures presented in assembly today ,besides 40 to 50% apple production was already damaged due to substandard pesticides and fertilizers. "Today I can tell you that orchardists across Kashmir are completely indebted to banks. Only because of government men and machinery we have to face 3000 crore of loss to apple Production over the years", he said. Fayaz Ahmad Malik Contradicting reply given to the query of M.Y Tarigami in which house was informed that 'enforcement wing of department of Agriculture is authorized for sampling of pesticides and chemical fertilizers and District Level Subject Matter Specialists of Horticulture department are also designated as pesticide Inspectors for purpose of sampling. The samples are sent to designated laboratories for testing,President fruit Gorwers Association of South Kashmir's Shopian District, Muhammad Amin said that 'Sampling of pesticides and fertilizers is just a formality which concerned government officials does every year on Shops instead of universities and nexus.' "Instead of laboratories and qualified specialists to known why Shopian District had to face Rs 2000 crore loss in apple Production in last three years,50% loss to production this year only because of substandsrd pesticides and fertilizers this year.let me tell you that staff members of both Horticulture and Agriculture are illiterate,lacking technical and scientific know how and now we feel that everything is done as per a conspiracy to destroy our agriculture production and make us beggars. "Said President fruit Growers association Shopian, Muhammad Amin Pertinently, government today admitted that 'the cold storage facility provisions is a concern with state government due to little fund allocations provided in Plan/Centrally Sponsored Scheme RKVY, the Department does not provide for to construct the cold stores in Fruit Growing areas for storage of different kinds of fruits especially apple. Orchardists also said that despite huge loss and protests over the years at many places, sale and Purchase of substandard pesticides and fertilizers is still at its peak in Kashmir markets and alleged that everything is happening in nexus of Distributors and concerned staff of government. |
