PDP misses Mehbooba, Baigh | | | Bashir Assad
Srinagar, Aug26; Leaderless and disarrayed opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was caught in a triangular battle today when ruling NC, CPI(M), PDF and Independent MLA, Er. Rashid attacked the party from all directions on the floor of the house. The PDP had moved an adjournment motion seeking discussion on general amnesty to the youth allegedly involved in stone pelting. As if it was a well planed floor management, the ruling NC MLAs, CPI(M) and PDF Legislators, M Y Tarigami and Hakim Mohammad Yasin and Independent MLA, Er. Rashid lauched a multi-directional attack on the opposition and singled it out very intelligently. Though there was complete pandemonium in the House when PDP and NPP MLAs walked into the well of the house demanding discussion on amnesty to stone pelters and ceasefire violation from across the border, the absence of its President Mehbooba Mufti and party stalwart Muzaffer Hussain Baigh (both elected to the parliament) was felt by one and all. Though Abdul Rehman Veeri, a senior legislator of the party initiated the debate on the adjournment motion, however, his speech was lacking both passion and substance. There were whispers all around that Veeri could not do justice with the subject thereby giving breather to the ruling NC to bounce back with full force. Barring Nizamuddin Bhat, no party legislator was impressive in his assertions. It merits a mention here that PDP is attending the session without nominating anyone as the Leader of Party (LoP) in the Assembly. The spot had fallen vacant after PDP President Mehbooba Mufti was elected to the Parliament from south Kashmir's Anantnag-Pulwama parliamentary constituency. In absence of Mehbooba, the senior PDP leader who could have taken over as the leader of the opposition was Muzzafer Husain Baigh who too was elected to the parliament from Baramullah-Kupwara constituency. Then there were Senior PDP leader, Moulvi Iftikhar Husain Ansari who is not keeping good health, MLA Devsar, Muhammad Sartaj Madni, MLA Bandipora, Nizamuddin Bhat and MLA Bijbehara, Abdul Rehman Veeri. It was expected that PDP would appoint Bhat or Veeri as leader of opposition in LA but the party went to the session of the 11th Legislative Assembly without nominating the LoP. |
