Jammu, Jan 12: As work begins in Civil Secretariat on Tuesday after a weekend break and holiday, the first major task before the government is to decide timing and nature of assembly session and presentation of the budget for upcoming financial year. An architect of eight annual budgets in Jammu and Kashmir, Finance Minister Abdul Rahim Rather is the man in the middle of all focus as how he makes the outlook of present regime different from the previous one as presentation of budget would reflect what the present government is actually up to.
When a new government takes over, particularly in beginning of a New Year, the first major challenge is always about facing legislature on the floor of the House and presenting annual budget for the next financial year. Sources have indicated that the NC-Congress coalition government will come up with a routine assembly session and traditional mode of budget without any hype.

Jammu, Jan 12: Ahead of the expansion of Omar Abdullah cabinet, expected in new few days, all top leaders of the Congress have been summoned by the high command in New Delhi for twin purposes –introspection on losses and future course of action.
Sources said that many senior Congress leaders were taking repeated rounds of New Delhi for seeking rehabilitation in the Ministry or Upper House of the legislature following which the high command has summoned all former Minister and Legislators who lost the recent assembly elections.

Jammu, Jan 12: High altitude areas of Jammu and Kashmir continue to shiver in intense cold as night temperature showed downward trend for the past one week.
Pahalgam, a hill resort in south Kashmir, was the coldest place in the state as the night temperature dipped to minus 6.4 degrees Celsius, MET office said.
Qazigund recorded a low of minus 5.5 degrees Celsius, while Kupwara and Banihal recorded a minimum of minus 2.7 and minus 1.6 degree Celsius respectively.
Srinagar, summer capital of the state, witnessed a low of 2.4 degrees Celsius.
While, Jammu, winter capital, recorded a minimum temperature of 6.7 degrees Celsius, the met office said.

New Delhi, Jan 12: Truckers on Monday called off their eight-day-old strike "unconditionally", a development that would restore movements of essential goods and ease price pressure, even as the government assured looking into their demands.
The decision to withdraw the agitation, which had distrupted the movement of commercial and essential goods leading to a huge loos of business, came after the agitating All India Motor Transport Congrees held detailed discussions with Transport Minister TR Baalu after his meeting with state trasnport ministers.

Srinagar, Jan 12: Three villagers were buried in a snow avalanche in north Kashmir Monday, the police said.
According to the police, the avalanche struck Chotali village near the border town of Uri, around 85 km from here.
'Three persons in Chotali village were buried under the avalanche,' a police officer said.
'Rescue teams of the police and army were immediately rushed to the spot. One person has been rescued from under the avalanche while efforts are on to save two more still buried under,' the police officer said.

Jammu, Jan 12: The Election Commission will hold biennial elections on February 13 to seven Rajya Sabha seats, including those held by Union Ministers Vayalar Ravi and Saif-ud-Din Soz as also National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah.
Elections would be held for four seats in Jammu and Kashmir and three in Kerala.
Besides the seats held by Soz and Abdullah, two other seats became vacant in Jammuand Kashmir following the retirement of S Tarlok Singh and Chowdhary Mohammad Aslam in November.
Elections to these four seats could not be held earlier due to non-existence of assembly in the state, which elected a new government in December.
