Trifurcation: Will Congress MP Madan Lal be served with a similar notice?
DIRECT, MINCING NO WORDS
12/13/2010 7:36:06 AM
NEHA EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Dec 12: It appears that the Congress high command has two yardsticks, one for the Jammu-based Congress leaders and the other for other Congress leaders. How else should one interpret the response the Health Minister, Sham Lal Sharma, and the Congress national general secretary and former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Digvijay Singh, evoked for their remarks on the same day (Saturday)? Digvijay Singh outraged the national sentiment, as also the sentiment of the martyr Hemant Karkare’s wife, saying that the “slain Mumbai ATS chief Hemant Karkare had told him that he feared for his safety from Hindu extremists.” The wife of Hemant Karkare has rejected outright what Digvijay said and said, “her husband was killed by the Pakistani terrorists, including Kasab,” and that what Digvijay has said would only help Pakistan and Kasab who is facing trial for the crime he and his associated committed.” What was the response of the Congress high command? The Congress said, "There is no question of agreeing or disagreeing. It is regarding a conversation between ...

`Withholding advertisements violates freedom of expression’
Andha bantay rewdian; mud mud kar day apnoo ko
12/13/2010 7:35:33 AM
Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 12: The Urdu adage Andha bantay rewdian; mud mud kar day apnoo ko. A blind man was entrusted the job of distributing money among the poor to ensure just and equitable distribution to all. However, he betrayed the trust reposed in him by turning to right and left to give maximum to his kith and kin. How beautifully does this adage apply to the information department? The department of information is supposed to act impartially especially as far as distribution of advertisements to newspapers is concerned. Monitoring the content of the newspapers is not the job of the information department. There are other agencies to monitor the content. But, like the typ...

J&K govt destroying democratic institutions: Veeri
12/13/2010 7:34:06 AM
Early Times Report JAMMU, Dec 12: Jammu and Kashmir is passing through a critical phase of the history and so is Early Times newspaper also. Ironically, in both the cases, it is the democratically elected government led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah which is the culprit. This was stated by former Minister of State for Home and MLA Bijbehara Abdul Rehman Veeri in a statement issued here today. He expressed deep regret over the attitude of state government towards Early Times newspaper. “I am unable to understand why government is hell bent upon demolishing and destroying every other democratic institution in Jammu and Kashmir,” added Veeri. Concerted move towards separation, onslaught on Indian Constitution
State Election Commission -- II
12/13/2010 7:33:30 AM
STARK REALITY RUSTAM EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Dec 12: The decision of the National Conference-Congress coalition government that state election commission would be set up is fraught with dangerous ramifications. The draft bill, if becomes an Act of legislation, would put in place a set-up across the state that would operate under the direct control of the ruling elite, which has never allowed democracy to flower in the state. The beneficiaries would be the ruling elite and the sufferers would be the common people. Secondly, the controversial and ill-conceived decision, if given an effect to, would ultimately lead to the situation as it existed in the state before 1966-67, when there ...

Painful to know that govt has imposed economic sanctions on Early Times
** It is a form of indirect censorship
12/13/2010 7:32:47 AM
Dear editor, It is painful to know that the Omar-led coalition government has imposed economic sanctions on Early Times by way of stopping the flow of advertisement to it. It sounds surprising, especially when it is a stakeholder in the democratisation process of which press is the Fourth Pillar. It cannot afford to gag the freedom of press. How can the government behave like an autocrat? It is unreasonable on the part of the government, which earns from taxes on individuals and business organisations, including the newspapers, to withhold advertisement from any media institution. The government in itself is not a profit-making body. It only survives on the taxes imposed on its citizens ...
