| Cabinet panel to negotiate with employees today | | | |

Jammu, Feb 17: With government nearly coming to standstill, the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has constituted a Cabinet Subcommittee to negotiate with the agitating employees.
This follows a detailed discussion the Chief Minister had this evening with his Cabinet colleagues. The Subcommittee will meet the employees tomorrow at 11 AM.
Among others, the Deputy Chief Minister, Mr. Tara Chand and Finance Minister, Mr. Abdul Rahim Rather were also present.
The five-member Cabinet Subcommittee will be headed by Finance Minister, Mr. Abdul Rahim Rather and have ministers, Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed, Mr. Ali Mohammad Sagar, Mr. Taj Mohi-ud-din and Mr. Surjit Singh Slathia as Members.

JAMMU, Feb 17: Bringing the government machinery to a grinding halt for second consecutive day, the unrelenting employees of the state government today warned of extended the ongoing strike by another seven days. The leaders of various unions of employees said that they have no alternative except to take the struggle forward to pressurize the Government.
Work remained paralyzed in all government departments and public sector undertakings in Jammu and Kashmir for the second consecutive day on Tuesday due to a three day strike called by government employees demanding implementation of the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations.

New Delhi, Feb 17: A bill to set up 12 Central universities in as many states and conversion of some existing universities to the same status was introduced in Lok Sabha today.
The Central Universities Bill, 2009 aims at creating one new Central university each in Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Orissa, Punjab, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu.
It also seeks to convert Guru Ghasidas Vishwavidyalaya in Chhattisgarh, Harisingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya in Madhya Pradesh and Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna University in Uttarakhand into Central universities.

NEW DELHI: The National Investigation Agency (NIA), set up in the aftermath of the Mumbai attacks, will probe only "gravest" incidents of terror
crimes and a team of officers is already in place to handle any such cases.
"As I speak, orders have been issued for appointment of one DIG, two superintendents of police, two deputy superintendents of police and two inspectors," Home Minister P Chidambaram said replying to supplementaries in the Lok Sabha.
He said only "gravest" cases of crimes will be taken up for investigation by the NIA, which will operate in a concurrent jurisdictional framework.

Jammu, Feb 17: Before that engineers could restore Doda and Kishtwar’s communication links with rest of the state, there are fears of another stretch of road sinking.
It has been reported that cracks measuring about two inches to two feet were found at Korapani, 29th Km from Batote towards Doda. It is assumed that the area may sink within coming days as it has already cracked and highway may wash away once again. The area is measuring about 150 meters where cracks were found.

New Delhi, Feb 17: The government has kept aside a total of Rs 850 crore to meet the expenses for the general elections likely to be held in April-May this year.
The outlay for election expenses has been provided for in the Interim Budget presented by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee in the Lok Sabha on Monday.
The expenditure put in the 'Non Plan Expenditure by Broad Categories in the Expenditure Budget' section has been made for meeting the carry forward liability in respect of general elections to the 15th Lok Sabha.

Jammu, Feb 17: Over 1.5 million Gujjar tribal women and children live in utter deprivation in Jammu and Kashmir due to traditional neglect and lack of awareness about welfare schemes, says a tribal research group.
'These Gujjar women are not aware of the schemes launched by the government for their education and social uplift as they live in far-flung areas and are nomads moving from one place to another,' notes Javed Rahi, secretary, Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation.
The foundation carries out studies on tribes and cultures and will shortly come out with a survey on the condition of Muslim Gujjars in Jammu and Kashmir.
