| Assembly adjourned sine die | | Comrade Tarigami pockets 8 hours, other MLAs spoke for 44 mins each | | | Ashwani Sharma debated for 84 minutes; BJP poor performer
ZAFAR CHOUDHARY
Jammu, Sept 1: After a most eventful and most controversial 36-day long session, as the Legislative Assembly was today adjourned sine die, the Communist Party of India (Marxist)’s lone legislator Mohammad Yusuf Tarigami set a history of sorts by walking away with maximum debate time of the House –much more than entire legislature party of Congress or the BJP or Panthers Party availed.
While Mohammad Yusuf Tarigami, a third time legislator and only representative of his party in the assembly, spent 8 hours in debates, discussions and raising issues of public importance, the average time availed by the legislators (excluding Speaker and the Ministers) in this session remained 42 minutes. Eloquent speaker with a knack for intervening as an expert on range of issues, Tarigami alone spent as much time in assembly debates as collectively spent of around 11 legislators.
According to party-wise details of time consumed compiled by the Legislative Assembly Secretariat, around 52 hours of the present session were ...

SRINAGAR, Sep 1: In the year 1999, Godbole Committee had recommended closure of almost all the “Corporations” that had been running in the red but providing livelihood to nearly 22,000 staff in Jammu & Kashmir. With few employees showing receptivity to Godbole’s ‘Golden Handshake’ and the successive governments turning the Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) into their fiefdom, cumulative red balance of eleven Corporations has reached Rs 2077.35 on March 31, 2009.
In written reply to MLA Zadibal Pir Afaq Ahmed’s un-starred question in Legislative Assembly today, Minister of Finance Abdul Rahim Rather made a startling disclosure when he said that as many as eleven of the sta...

VIKRAM GAUR
Jammu, Sept 1: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who holds the Power Department, just can’t wish away the challenge of reforms by handing over the answering job in assembly to Tourism Minister Rigzin Jora as there is no magic wand to bring the transmission and distribution losses down and put the sector in stream of discipline. Need of the hour is drastic remedial measures.
After keenly going through the statements made in the Legislative Assembly on reduction of Transmission and Distribution losses from the currently prevailing rate of 72 per cent, it is important to clarify here that T&D loss is a misnomer as the huge loss figure includes large scale unchecked theft of powe...

ZAFAR CHOUDHARY/
AHMED ALI FAYYAZ
Jammu/Srinagar, Sept 1: Not in any mood to damage its Jammu specific political constituency, the coalition partner Congress appears to have scored a significant brownie point over the National Conference as it managed to get the Bill on banning inter-district recruitments shelved for now.
However, the Congress’ significant political triumph was not without cracks within the party as two Ministers –Taj Mohiuddin and Sham Lal Sharma –locked horns in the Legislative Assembly as the former pleaded Kashmir cause and the latter batted for Jammu. Interestingly, the key player in the whole issue, the National Conference, particularly its legislators from North...
