| Temple Bill Row: Select Committee to hold 'final' meeting today | | Written suggestions sought from members | | Majority view on retaining original spirit of Bill may prevail
Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 16: The controversies related to Temple Bill are likely to end as the Select Committee which has been discussing the issue threadbare for the entire year is holding its final meeting tomorrow. As the issue remained enveloped in controversies with many quarters resisting some shrines to be brought under the purview of the Bill and members of the panel also divided lately, consensus eluded till the last meeting which was held on Febraury 10 , the day on which Budget session commenced. Even as the 'pressure groups' are mounting influence on some members to persist on non inclusion of certain shrines managed by Dharamarth Trusts and own managements, substantial pressure is also building from within the panel to let the Bill get passed in its original form without effecting any changes. As the dilemma and differences continue, written suggestions have been have been sought from all the members of the panel which may be taken as final word tomorrow. In what it looks like the Temple Bill issue seeing some ray of light after taking roller coaster rides in the meetings of the select committee as also in facing stiff resistance from certain quarters, a meeting has been convened tomorrow which in all likelihood can be the conclusive one, according to sources. The government which is already facing criticism for not expediting things to ensure passage of the Bill does not want to get the matter delayed any more, said the sources. The Bill amid discussions of the Select committee has been witnessing fresh hiccups with more and more management committees including Dharmarth Trust strongly opposing the shrines under their control and management be brought under the purview of the Bill. However, the PNBMT a nodal organisation with support of so many frontal organisations of Hindus which has been spearheading the campaign for passage of the Bill for the sole purpose of protection of properties attached with many shrines in Kashmir Valley has projected this move as sabotaging the purpose and spirit of the Bill by those having vested interests in opposing it. However, the high point of the issue now remains that a meeting has been called tomorrow in which a final decision would be taken as to whether all the shrines would be brought under the Bill or some excluded from its ambit. Sources said in all likelihood, the Select Committee shall finally also go with the view of majority members that Bill be passed in its original draft and form, which implies that no Trust or management committee would be left to govern the affairs of any shrine or temple. While written suggestions have also been sought from all the nine members, a final report is likely to emerge tomorrow which would be submitted before the House. There are in all nine members from various political parties on board in the Select committee headed by Law Minister Mir Saifullah himself. It however, remains to be seen if the government allows the passage of the most crucial bill in the current session or not. |
