| Court extends judicial remand of 2 traders | | Trans LoC narcotic case | | Syed Tahir Bukhari
BARAMULLA, Feb 17: Principal Sessions Judge Baramulla, Rashid Ali Dar today extended the judicial remand of two traders who are in custody for their involvement in the supply of narcotics recovered from the truck of a truck driver of Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) exactly a month back. The two traders Tariq Ahmad Sheikh and Showkat Habib lodged at Sub Jail Baramulla were brought under security cover and presented in the court of Principal Sessions Judge, Baramulla. However, the driver identified as Mohammad Shafiq Awan was not presented in the court and is expected to be presented tomorrow. Awan continues to be in judicial remand with likelihood that the same may be extended. The court after hearing the arguments extended the judicial remand of both Tariq and Showkat till March 3 when the case would be taken up again. It would be in place to mention here that the consignment of narcotics supplied from PoK recovered from the truck of Awan was meant for Showkat. During questioning Showkat said that he was going to sell the narcotics haul to Tariq and following this Tariq was arrested by police as well. One hundred seventeen packets of narcotics worth Rs 100 crores were seized from the Awan of Muzaffarabad on January 17 at Salamabad Uri, after which cross-border trade remains suspended. It would be pertinent to mention that Salamabad-Chakoti Trade Association has appointed Abdul Salam Rather of Baramulla to pursue the case of the arrested driver. However, due to some unavoidable circumstances the arrested driver was not presented in the court. "Under the laws of Traders Association we cannot hire a lawyer for Tariq and Showkat, who were arrested on the charges of drug smuggling. It is not possible to support them as it may have been done purposely," said Hilal Ahmad Turki, General Secretary, Salamabad-Chakoti Trade Union. Turki said that Awan will be brought to the court on Tuesday where the appointed lawyer will once again plead his case for bail. He said they are pursuing the case on the humanitarian grounds so that Awan does not feel insecure. He added that Awan is innocent until proven guilty and that law will take its own course. |
