Vested interests in Assembly oppose critics of Article 370
Against people's empowerment
2/17/2014 11:22:00 PM
Rustam
JAMMU, Feb 17: On Sunday, the Assembly witnessed a war of words between the supporters and opponents of Article 370. The opponents demanded its abrogation saying such a change in the constitution would help the people of the State and empower them. One of the critics of Article 370 said during the debate on the annual budget proposals for 2014-2015 that "you (NC-Congress coalition) have developed Modi phobia. You should come out of this phobia" and abrogate Article 370". Another critic of Article 370 took on the ruling coalition and demanded its repeal in the interest of the State and its people. He said: "if the Article is abrogated the situation will be far better in the State.
But the supporters of Article 370, instead of discussing what this Article had done to the people of State, dismissed the demand out-of-hand and said no one could alter or abrogate this Article. The critics of the Article belonged to the BJP and its supporters to the Congress and the NC. The NC and the Congress lawmakers spoke in one voice and left none in any doubt that they were on the same side and that they would oppose all those who demand abrogation of Article 370. One of the supporters of Article 370 said that "Article 370 abrogation would be on our dead bodies and no one can abrogate it". He belonged to the Congress and was none other than a Cabinet Minister from Jammu. He got support from two other lawmakers, one each from Jammu province and Kashmir region. Supporting his party colleague, the Congress lawmaker said: "No power on earth can abrogate Article 370. He said, "Jab Tak Suraj Chand Rahay Ga, Dafah 370 Rahay Ga". (Till there are Sun and Moon, Article 370 will be there). Infact, both the Congress and the NC lawmakers expressed identical views.
It would have been better had there been a comprehensive debate on Article 370 to find if it had benefited the State and its people or harmed them and hampered the process of the State's integration into India. That the NC and the Congress opposed the critics of Article 370 without holding a discussion on it once again established that the Congress and the NC are anti-people, anti-democratic and supporters of a dispensation that is not only outside the constitutional framework but also pro-separatist.
One could understand the reasons behind the NC's opposition to the critics of Article 370, but one fails to understand why the Congress, which claims that it is an organization of national character, should speak the NC language. By speaking the NC language, the Congress is simply ensuring its political demise in Jammu province and elsewhere in the country. But it will not reform itself. It is clear from the political behaviour of the Congress party across the country.
