SRINAGAR, Jan 26: Contrary to a many speculations and apprehensions, Republic Day was celebrated today in Kashmir valley without any disruption or violence as Ministers of the coalition government unfurled national flag and took salute at colourful ceremonial parades at all the ten district headquarters. Amid a near-total shutdown, that had been called by separatist leaders and different militant outfits and was ironically enforced by government agencies, the biggest event of the day took place at Bakhshi Memorial Sports Stadium in this capital city where Minister of Finance Abdul Rahim Rather hoisted the national flag and delivered a ceremonial speech.

| | Would CAPD minister own responsibility and resign? | | | Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Jan 26: It is now for the last 20 days that the crisis created by the shortages of cooking gas and kerosene oil in the Valley has not eased. This despite the fact that the State government claims 60000 LPG cylinders and 2.50 lakh litres of kerosene having reached the Valley through the Jammu-Srinagar highway after it was restored for traffic recently.
The shortages have resulted in widespread public anger with consumers demanding action against those directly and indirectly responsible for the deplorable situation.
In any other State, the first to accept responsibility would be the minister heading the CAPD who would have resigned on moral grounds.

Jammu, Jan 26: The father son duo-Abdullahs have once again managed well to bring into focus the much controversial AFSPA issue , this time taking leverage of the SC observation on Pathribal encounter in which it admonished the Army for seeking immunity under the Act. Both Union Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah as well as Chief Minister Omar Abdullah have asserted the need for looking into necessity of what NC has been contending with regard to partial revocation of AFSPA.
One cannot comment nor is it appropriate to comment on SC's observations against Army with particular reference to Pathribal case. But one is surely prompted to ask NC leadership few questions in that c...

JAMMU, Jan 26: However, the situation turned extremely dangerous in the last week of last December, when the Congress crossed all the limits and suggested religion-based quota in the proposed Lokpal institution. The Lokpal and Lokayukta Bill said the reserved quota, including quota for the minorities, in the Lokpal institution should not be less than 50 per cent. This was violation and negation of the Indian Constitution and the several Supreme Court rulings that the reserved quota under no situation shall cross the 50 per cent limit. The Congress, in collaboration with other "secular" formations, did all this to woo the Muslim electorate, especially in UP. The BJP and similar other...
| | As police lack will to regulate traffic, jams on roads become regular feature | | | Bharat Bhushan
JAMMU, Jan 26: It is not that police are incompetent to regulate vehicular traffic. The reality is that they lack the will to do so. On January 25 and 26, city roads witnessed no traffic jam. Reason: minibuses -- the main violators of traffic rules on roads -- followed the set norms.
Instead of picking, or dropping commuters in the middle of the road, at congested rotaries, or the places where there are bottle-necks, minibuses were seen stopping at the places earmarked for them, leaving ample space for other vehicles to move.
Their operators had of course been directed by traffic police to follow this rule to avoid jams on the Republic Day eve. As a standard measure again...
