| Congress leaders move Sonia’s court as factionalism deepens | | | |

Jammu, Nov 18: Fearing explicit exploitation by big ruling brother National Conference, a worried lot of alliance partner Congress has pleaded before the President Sonia Gandhi seeking her to cast the whip and reign in factionalism in state unit of party which is already eating into vitals of the organization.
Many senior leaders in Jammu and Kashmir continue to be worried over the infighting within the organisation which seems to have assumed serious dimensions. A number of congress ministers today admitted that the tussle between the duissidents and the loyalists in the congress could prove harmful to the party in the long run.
These ministers, including RS Chib, Minister for Technical and Medical Education, and Raman Bhalla, Revenue and Relief Minister, said that infighting in the congress could be exploited by the National Conference and the PDP. They said that during the last five years number of congress leaders had either joined the PDP or the National Conference after they felt disappointed with the tussle between the dissidents and the loyalists. ... | |

SRINAGAR, Nov 18: Army’s brigade commanders and Deputy Inspectors General (DIGs) of Police and paramilitary forces are the highest ranking officials killed by separatist militants in 20 years of armed insurgency in Jammu & Kashmir. While as Army has suffered the loss of 3 Brigadiers, followed by 2 DIGs of the paramilitary Border Security Force (BSF), one-odd DIG of Jammu & Kashmir Police (JKP) was eliminated in a broad daylight shootout when he was coming out of a mosque in this capital city after performing his prayers on occasion of Idd-ul-azha five years ago.

Jammu, Nov 18: It was a wafer thin margin but the victory was historic in sense –the Amar Singh Club today elected its first ever woman secretary, setting a gender trend of the sorts at capital’s elite socializing hub.
Manjeet Manocha was elected first women secretary of the club for which elections were held here today.
She received seven votes, against her nearest rival Sidharth Sharma who got only six votes out of 15 votes. One member didn’t cast his vote and the other vote was found invalid. So out of thirteen votes, the winner stole the show with a narrow margin of one vote.

JAMMU, NOV 18: The state government has today constituted two high level boards –separate for Kashmir and Jammu provinces to consider and recommend the cases of convicts for remission of their sentences.
This move is being seen as a humane and pragmatic step and big relief for the prisoners who have become reformed beings while serving their jail terms. The boards, both headed by Director General Prisons Dr Ashok Bhan, will study the individual cases of convicts to make recommendations for remittance of their sentence.

Islamabad, Nov 18: Pakistan has sought the US intervention in stopping India from building mega power projects, ahead of the start of the construction of the second phase of Baglihar and several other projects in Jammu and Kashmir.
The work on the second phase of the project is to start in next six months time, and its survey report would be ready by this month-end.

Jammu, Nov 18: With high altitude mountainous belts in the state already under heavy snowfall, army is procuring around 600 state-of-art technological equipments for its use in the avalanche prone areas of Jammu and Kashmir.
The army's northern command has already issued tenders for purchase of 600 Avalanche Victim Detector (Triple Antenna) for its use in the mountainous belts of Kashmir, Ladakh and Jammu and other vital areas in the state.
"These AVDs would be used for locating victims caught in avalanches in the mountainous belts. This is of most importance for the troops serving in the high altitude and mountainous areas," a senior officer said.

Jammu, Nov 18 : Vehicular movement on 300-km-long Jammu-Srinagar national highway (NH-1A) was halted today due to landslide at Nachlana area, 176 km from here, in Ramban district, police sources said.
''A big boulder has slid on the national highway blocking the road for vehicular movement'' the Police Control Room said.
Resumption of normal traffic on the highway could take some more hours as the boulder, which has blocked the road, would have to be exploded, the PCR said.

Srinagar, Nov 18: With the death of one each pilgrim from Jammu and Kashmir and Uttar Pradesh, the death toll from the country during this year's Haj pilgrimage in the holy cities of Makkah and Madina has reached 50, reports said here today.
More than 1.25 lakh pilgrims from India, including about 8,000 from Jammu and Kashmir, had gone to undertake the pilgrimage this year.
The reports said 67-year-old pilgrim Mohammad Hussan Khan died due to cardio respiratory arrest at Makkah.
So far, five pilgrims from the state have died due to heart attack and road accidents since October 20, when the first flight from India landed at Jeddah.
