SRINAGAR, May 9: President of the ruling National Conference (NC) and former Chief Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah, today revealed that senior PDP leader and his two-time ministerial colleague, Maulvi Iftikhar Hussain Ansari, would soon face court trial in the infamous Sidhra Land Scandal of 1997. He said that the NC-Congress coalition government would also investigate how Mufti Mohammad Sayeed’s PDP-led coalition government had written off Sales Tax arrears worth Rs 27 Cr outstanding against Ansari’s firm in exchange for his defection from the NC and a bank’s role in liquidating Ansari’s loan arrears would also come under scanner.
In Take One Television’s bi-weekly current affairs programme “Face to Face With Ahmed Ali Fayyaz”, Dr Abdullah disclosed that the government would soon produce Challan in the infamous Sidhra Land Scandal in a court of law. Jammu, May 9: Tension broke out in the Falain-Mandal area along Nikki Tawi near here this morning when the illegal encroachers of Social Forestry land resisted the department’s move, assisted by Police, to evict them from the area.
On request of Department of Social Forestry, when a team of cops led by Superintendent of Police Mubashir Latiefi reached the area, the encroachers attempted to chase them away by heavy stone pelting. This led to a scuffle between encroachers and Police resulting into injuries to a dozen of policemen including SP Latiefi. One cop is reported to have sustained serious injuries.

Srinagar, May 9- The Executive Officer, State Hajj Committee, Srinagar, has advised all the intending pilgrims of Hajj for the year 2009 to obtain the Hajj application forms from the offices of respective Deputy Commissioners from May 12, 2009 and submit the same after completing all the formalities by or before May 31, 2009 in the office of J&K State Hajj Committee, Baitul Hujaj (Haj House), Bemina.
The pilgrims have been advised to go through the instructions appended with the application form thoroughly before filling the form. No form shall be entertained after May 31, 2009, the executive officer said.

Jammu, May 9- Three militants including a divisional commander of Lashker-e-Toiba were killed while a policeman was injured in two separate encounters in Ganderbal district in Kashmir and Doda district in Jammu, official sources said on Saturday.
A defence ministry spokesman, Lt Col Biplab Nath said that two LeT operatives were killed in an encounter at Dhar area in Doda district of Jammu region at 0015 hours.
He said that troops of 10 Rashtriya Rifles and Police launched joint cordon-and-search after specific inputs about the presence of the militants in the area.

Jammu, May 9- A Special Police Officer (SPO) was injured when he shot himself with his service weapon after being denied leave by his seniors in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir.
‘Abusing his senior officers, the SPO identified as Vikram Singh ( No. 544) of Marta yesterday jumped into Rani Talab (pond) and later shot himself but survived with minor injury in his leg,’ sources said.
The frustrated SPO allegedly attempted to end his life after being denied leave, for which he had applied for over last over two months.

New Delhi, May 09: Eminent academician Prof Ved Prakash has been appointed as Vice Chairman of University Grants Commission (UGC).
The appointment has been made by the HRD Ministry after "necessary clearance" from the Election Commission, as required under the Model Code of Conduct, the ministry said in a statement.
The post of UGC Vice Chairman has been lying vacant since February 28 when Prof MC Sharma was appointed vice chancellor of a newly created Central University. Prakash has been looking after responsibilities of the position.
