NC pulls first gear, list of 65 out
Farooq jumps fray from Ganderbal, all old faces repeated
11/6/2008 11:38:15 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 5: The National Conference is in full gear and no chances are being taken on projecting its seriousness on beating all parties at the hustings. After the party president Omar Abdullah rushed back to try luck at Ganderbal, father and former Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah will contest from Hazratbal constituency in Srinagar City as National Conference today announced tickets for 65 assembly constituencies going to polls in third to seven phase of elections. Candidates for first and second phase had already been declared by the party and now the announcement is pending for only four constituencies where party has very little base. The mega list was declared by National Conference General Secretary Sheikh Nazir Ahmed who is back in reckoning after almost six years. Nazir has not been seen around in party affairs since 2002 when he was left almost jobless in the organization just ahead of elections. National Conference is so far only major political party to have declared list of more than 80 candidates out of total 87 seats going to polls in seven p...

EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 6: Tinted glasses of vehicles say many things –the boss sitting inside is a privileged, protected and more importantly a VVIP. But is seen through same glasses he could be a criminal or saboteur as well. Therefore, Jammu Police have make up mind to take black screens of the window panes of vehicles which actually do not have a valid permission. But the difficulty is obvious. More vehicles have black screens than anyone could have guessed. ...

Mehbooba woos Yash back but battle between Naz, Jan
11/6/2008 11:37:02 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT POONCH, Nov 6: Proving the political calculations wrong, battle is toughening in Poonch between Bashir Ahmed Naz of Congress and Ajaz Jan of the National Conference. The Peoples Democratic Party leader Mehbooba Mufti who was on a whirlwind tour of the district though managed to pacify party’s enraged leader Yash Pal Sharma but its candidate is still finding it tough to make a place in third angle of the contest. Situation may change in the coming days but so far it appears to be a straight contest. The Congress had given ticket to Bashir Ahmed Naz after he drew empty from his own party National Conference. This decision was clearly influenced by the caste factor as p...

Why after 60 years
Jammu Muslims take KCC protest with pinch of salt
11/6/2008 11:36:31 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 6: Shutdowns and protests in Kashmir are nothing new but today it was a strange reason. The Kashmir Coordination Committee had called for a protest march to protest the atrocities against Muslims in Jammu in 1947 –perhaps first such protest since 1947. Muslims in Jammu have taken this stance of the Coordination Committee with a pinch of salt and have sought to convey that they should be left alone. Several Muslim leaders in Jammu, while reacting to the Kashmir Coordination Committee decision have observed that the sympathy shown by Kashmiri separatist or leaders after 60 years is nothing but to keep themselves in lime light. They said these leaders have ne...

Unsaid curfew keeps protesters indoors
11/6/2008 11:35:49 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Nov 6: Without formally declaring a curfew authorities today laid siege on entire Srinagar city and some other towns of Kashmir Valley as the Coordination of Committee –an amalgam of several separatist and other organizations –called for march to Jamia Masjid to protest against atrocities on Jammu Muslims in 1947 and formally launch the anti-election campaign. The restrictions were imposed by the authorities as the separatist Coordination Committee had announced that it would "formally" announce their anti-poll campaign and march towards Jamia Masjid in protest against atrocities against Muslims in Jammu in 1947 the wake of Partition. However, officials at th...

Obama hits J&K more than local polls
Geelani loves him, BJP hates him; academicians say he is ‘hope’
11/6/2008 11:35:19 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 6: As media expansion brings global affairs to discussions in living rooms of modest urban homes and even in the countryside fields, the election of Barack Obama as 44th President of the United States of America has not only been keenly watched in Jammu and Kashmir but is also being actively debated particularly in context of Indo-US relations and Kashmir issue. Separatists in Kashmir are elated over his election as has indicated willingness to mediate in the Kashmir issue –something always opposed by India. Parties like BJP have strongly reacted to his statements on Kashmir while academicians are guardedly optimistic about the due change of guard in US. S...
