Srinagar | Dec 17
The Army today claimed to have foiled an infiltration bid by gunning down a militant near the line of Control (LOC) in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir.
"The infiltration bid was foiled in Uri sector and so far one militant was killed. The operation is still in progress," defence spokesman Lt Col J S Brar said.
However, police said a group of militants was challenged by Army troops at village Madiya in Kamalkote, 140 kms from here, and in the ensuing gunbattle one of the infiltrators was killed.
Arms and ammunition were recovered from the possession of the slain militant, police said.

Jammu, Dec 17 : The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has sanctioned a loan of Rupees 2,500 crore for infrastructure development in Jammu and Kashmir, where militancy had brought economic and reconstruction activity to a complete halt in the 1990s.
This loan will be made available from next June, and would be in addition to a loan of Rs.1,618 crore, that has already been provided and of which only about 48 percent has been spent.
These funds are being utilised for construction of roads, water supply schemes and drainage system in various cities and towns.

Srinagar, Dec 17 : Traffic on the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway, the lifeline of the Kashmir valley, was restored this morning after remaining suspended for about six hours due to slippery road conditions following heavly snowfall.

New Delhi, Dec 17 : As the defence ministry plans revamping of road infrastructure along the India-China border, shortage of manpower in the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is proving to be a major hindrance.
"The total sanctioned posts in BRO is 42,646. However, only 34,966 posts are currently filled," a senior BRO official said.
In the officer cadre, there are 1,540 vacancies but the organisation has been able to fill only 880 posts.
The BRO is currently undertaking projects in treacherous terrains and harsh weather of Ladakh in Jammu and Kashmir and in northeastern states bordering China.

Hardly 40 days are left for the R-Day funtion. But a visit to the ground zero of the 1995 blasts nowadays tells an entirely different story.
