AHMED ALI FAYYAZ
SRINAGAR, Dec 7: With the fast changing political climate in this troubled Himalyan state, Kashmir’s separatist leaders have begun to throng hubs of cultural activity, including concerts of Western entertainers---perhaps much more than visiting the tombs of their “martyrs of azadi”. Jammu & Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) Chairman and the Valley’s pioneer of armed insurgency, Yasin Malik, was today conspicuously in attendance, alongwith a number of pro-India politicians and Ministers, at Terra Naomi’s concert on global warming at Sher-e-Kashmir International Conference Centre.
Attending the YouTube sensation’s show is definitely not the first for one-time dreaded terrorist Yasin Malik whose transformation has been meticulously illustrated by one of USA’s best read writers a couple of years back. Many at home find it hard to reconcile to Malik’s “transformation”. His nonagenarian mentor and father of America’s celebrated poet, Agha Ashraf Ali, had taken umbrage to Governor S K Sinha’s reference to the book “Transformation of a Terrorist” at the same spot two ...

| Minor criticism puts NC in defencive mode | | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 7: Even though there was not much criticism on Omar Abdullah’s employment policy but the National Conference’s Jammu provincial leadership including half a dozen legislators today batted for the package and defended it on the fronts yet to be questioned by the public.
Two days after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah unveiled the keenly awaited employment policy, none of the principal opposition parties –the Peoples Democratic Party and the Bhartiya Janta Party –have officially reacted to the policy –neither negatively nor positively. Panthers Party has been the only party which today formally reacted to the employment policy and declared it a dud. Despite this ...

MOSCOW : Seeking to take forward the strategic partnership to new heights, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today made it clear that India’s relations with third countries will never be at the cost of "time-tested ties" with Russia.
After a one-on-one meeting with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev at the Kremlin which he described as "very productive", Singh said, "a stronger Russia is important for world peace."
Both India and Russia have a joint role to play to deal with regional and international issues, including steps for revival of global economy, terrorism and reforms of international institutions, Singh said in his opening remarks before the two sides got into delegation-level ta...

New Delhi, Dec 7: The rehabilitation of Dal and Nagin lakes can be done only if Rs 654 crore are made available by the Central government. The sum includes an amount of Rs 356 crore required as cost of resettlement and rehabilitation of families living on the twin lakes.
An amount of Rs 298.76 crore was sanctioned in September 2005 under the National Lake Conservation Programme (NLCP) for this project. Mr Saif-ud-Din Soz had lobbied hard for getting the project included in the Prime Minister’s Rehabilitation Plan (PMRP).
Doubts, however, persist about the second and larger component of Rs 356 crore being sought by the state government. The officials of the Lakes and W...

ABID SHAH
NEW DELHI, DEC 7: Clearly rattled by the blow suffered by the peace process in the wake of the recent attack on a senior Hurriyat leader at Srinagar, the Chief Minister Omar Abdulllah called on today the Union Home Minister P Chidambaram here and discussed the situation thrown up by the attack on Fazal Haq Qureshi by unknown assailants.
Today’s meeting between Chief Minister and Union Home Minister signifies heightened concern among the powers-that-be vis-à-vis the security of votaries of peace through talks in Jammu and Kashmir with the Centre. Qureshi has been among such Samaritans from separatist Hurriyat ranks whose moves have obviously been attempted to be scuttled by f...
