JAMMU, APRIL 10 – Election Commissioner of India Mr. Navin B. Chawla has said that Election Commission was satisfied with the poll and security arrangements made for holding free, fair and transparent Parliamentary elections in Jammu and Kashmir beginning April 16. He also congratulated the Civil and Police administration for holding a landmark Assembly election last year and hoped that they will provide similar Lok Sabha election this year with the same level of fairness.
The Election Commissioner said this while addressing a crowded press conference, here this evening, after holding several meetings with political parties and Divisional Administration.
Mr. Chawla, along with Deputy Election Commissioner of India, Mr. R. Balakrishnan, arrived here this morning from New Delhi to review the poll preparedness for the first and second phase of Lok Sabha elections in the State. Chief Electoral Officer, J&K, Mr. B. R. Sharma was also present on the occasion.

NEW DELHI: Threat levels in India are high with Pakistan-based terror outfits deciding to work in tandem even as there are reports of
infiltration again increasing across the Kashmir Valley, Home Minister P Chidambaram said Friday.
"We simply have to keep our powder dry. Make sure that we remain on high alert because four organisations are working in consort. That means the level of threat is pretty high," Chidambaram told the NDTV news channel in an interview.
He said the four terrorist organisations - Lashker-e-Taiba (LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), Jamat-ul-Mujahideen (JuM) and Hizbul Mujahideen - were earlier operating separately but had come together now.

New Delhi, April 10 Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Friday said there was a serious threat to disturb the elections through militant incursions and admitted his government had failed to ward off terror attacks.
“There is a serious threat. There is no doubt that terrorists have not given up the evil design to destabilise our country to interfere with the poll process. The successful poll process in Jammu and Kashmir has not been liked by some forces abroad,” Manmohan Singh said during an interaction with women journalists.
“Every effort is being made to disrupt the poll process through infiltration. We are alert and have to be alert to deal with the menace,” he said.

It has been one of the most challenging periods for Indian security forces in Kashmir. Of late, they have been encountering some of the most motivated and well-trained terrorists ever to cross over into Kashmir.
Now, after an 18-day operation in Kupwara, eight terrorists with clear links to Pakistan have been caught.
According to the army, passports issued in Pakistan to five of the eight of them prove their Pakistani origins.
Also, all of them were trained at handling weapons in Pakistan. This latest catch only adds to the growing worry on the border over the unprecedented spurt in infiltration bids.

At least ten persons, including two policemen, were injured as police fired teargas shells and used batons to disperse stone-pelting separatists in Srinagar and Baramulla districts of Jammu and Kashmir today, official sources said.
Shouting "anti-election" slogans, groups of youth took to streets shortly after Friday prayers at Jamia Masjid in downtown Srinagar and indulged in stone-pelting on police and paramilitary forces, the sources said.
The sources said police immediately swung into action and resorted to firing tear gas and baton charge to restore law and order.

Sirinagar , Apr 10:State-run telecom services provider BSNL plans to increase the capacity of working mobile connections up to over 12 lakh lines by the end of 2009-10.
The expansion plan involves addition of about 494 Base Transreceiver stations (BTS), Telecom Secretary Siddhartha Behura told reporters here today.
BSNL will be able to provide mobile connections on demand with improved coverage and quality, he added.
