srinagar, Apr 12: Kashmir Program Director of the American non-profit organisation, Mercy Corps, Usman Rahim, has been deported to USA after working on different projects in coordination with the state and the central governments for nearly eight years. If these highly placed official sources are to be believed, the immigration authorities recorded on Usman's passport that his activities in India had been "not consistent with the visa granted to him" from time to time.
Usman's wife, Nafeesa, who is a British national, has been left alone in Srinagar. Sources said that nobody from the government asked her either to leave the country or stay back in Srinagar. Efforts to contact ...

| | Interlocuters' report to restrict Parliament's jurisdiction over Jammu Kashmir | | | Early Times Report
jammu, Apr 12: If the latest reports are to be relied on the cat is out of the bag of the interlocuters. The three interlocutors have, as per the reports, recommended that a constitution committee (CC) being set up to review all those central laws that had been extended to Jammu and Kashmir after 1952.
The CC should be headed by an eminent jurist and comprise members from the state and all over the country who are known for their merit, honesty and integrity. It should be left to the CC to decide which central laws needed to be repealed and which needed to be retained. In fact the interlocutors want those laws that restrict the state's powers in shaping the destiny of p...

Jammu, Apr 12: Even as J&K coalition government has reaffirmed its commitment on holding the Urban Local Bodies elections as early as possible, what appears to be the main hurdle at this point of time is differences between the allies NC and Congress over the fundamental issue of politics, as both are yet to arrive at unanimity as to whether the polls be held on party basis separately or jointly as coalition on the lines of friendly contest.
Sources said even though the government has projected unpreparedness of Election authorities in preparing and finalizing draft electoral rolls as the main reason for delaying the polls, it is actually sharp and vertical differen...

jammu, Apr 12: Things in the Shiite Muslim-dominated Kargil in the trans-Himalayan Ladakh region are assuming alarming proportions and the developments as they have started unfolding in Kargil have the potential of provoking the already rather dissatisfied and neglected Shiite Muslims in the Valley to ape their co-religionists in Ladakh and create troubles in Kashmir. The Shiite Muslims in Kashmir constitute one of the four major communities in Kashmir, including Sunni Muslims, ethnically different Gujjar and Bakerwal Muslims and Pathowari-speaking or "Pahari"-speaking Muslims (all, without any exception, Sunnis) and Shiite Muslims.

| | Indian leaders' mindset of defeat | Delhi And J&K | | Rustam
jammu, Apr 12: Why is it that the Government of India pursuing a unilateral process of "reconciliation" with Pakistan bordering on acceptance of latter's contentions on almost all aspects of issues involved in Jammu and Kashmir? The reason perhaps lies in the mindset of the Indian leadership at the helm, barring perhaps Lal Bahadur Shastri, Indira Gandhi and PV Narsimha Rao. Rest of the Indian leaders, which remained at the helm of affairs perhaps were never actually able to convince themselves that a Muslim majority state can have a sustainable existence within secular India. Like Gandhi, all of them seemed to believe in abdication in the face of the challenge posed by Muslim ident...
