Thinning Khaki from streets, Khoda saves situation
7/31/2008 11:41:22 PM
Early Times Reporter Jammu | July 31 Even though two Police officers had to removed from their positions to quell the protests following alleged barbaric acts of their colleagues but the leadership of Jammu and Kashmir Police deserves accolades for taking timely measures to cease the growing dissent against the men on Khaki. In last four days of agitation, it could have turned into a mob versus Police battle if the DGO had not taken the timely action of ordering restraint. Since Monday the protests are keeping their tempo but there is no visible anger. This could happen only when the DGP thinned down presence of cops from the volatile streets where men in Khaki were seen as the hate s...

Torch rallies illuminate city of ghosts
7/31/2008 11:40:24 PM
Early Times Reporter Jammu | Jul 31 After sunset when darkness engulfs this City of Temples, several groups of people come out of their houses and walk down the streets shouting ''Bam Bam Bhole'' under the light of 'mashals'. But not for worship! A question may strike the mind at first if they are rehearsing for next day's protest demonstration against the government for restoration of forest land to Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB). But for the class 12 student Bunti, who was one among the hundreds of people marching through the Baskhi Nagar at around 2200 hrs with torches in their hands, it was a judicious use of time. ''I wanted to complete my fourth chapter of Physics before goi...

7/31/2008 11:40:00 PM
Early Times Reporter Jammu | July 31 While there is all din about the Shri Amarnath Shrine, the annual pilgrimage which took off on an unfortunate controversial note, has silently declined to near a negligible influx of pilgrims nearly 20 days ahead of its scheduled period. The pilgrimage has witnessed an immense dip following tension over the land row with 305 pilgrims leaving for the cave shrine amid tight security today. Official reports said that 305 devotees, including 165 male, 41 females, 3 children and 96 'sadhus' left from the Bhagwati Nagar base camp in 9 vehicles. The Amarnath land row has brought down the figure of pilgrims coming from across the country to visit the ho...

Dul Hasti cost escalates by 16%
7/31/2008 11:39:28 PM
New Delhi | July 31 The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved the revised budget for the "Dulhasti Hydro Electric Project" in Jammu and Kashmir. Finance Minister P.Chidambaram said, "The cost of the project will be 5228 crore rupees, an increase of over 16 crore rupees due to escalation of cost of inputs." The 390 MW Jammu and Kashmir hydro project has been constantly hit by delays and cost escalation problems. The project, built on River Chenab, was initiated by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1983. The project is seen as significant as on the one hand it will provide electricity at a cheaper rate while on the other, it will generate employment opportunities for l...

Hello, Bijli hai…so goes the conversation
7/31/2008 11:39:09 PM
Gareeb Das Jammu | July 31 Whenever women talk to their friends or relations, these days, on telephone the main topic they seem to discuss endlessly is the "Bijli position”. Instead of usual greetings the conversation starts with "Did you have power during the night?""Yes the two-hour schedule in power was strictly maintained but we had no electricity during the day," says the voice on the other end of line. Since women have better memory power than men they dish out hour by hour picture on the power cuts. Others discuss the menace of supply of power on a single phase. They giggle when the two exchange notes on the minus points of single phase supply." We have to switch off the refri...
