Pak targets LoC fencing with mortars to push in militants

Early Times Report JAMMU, Jan 17: Visibly frustrated by at least the 10 failed infiltration bids on the International Border (IB) in the first fortnight of the New Year 2010, Pakistan fired dozens of mortars in Krishna Ghati (KG) sector of Poonch to blow up fencing to make way for militants. The mortars, however, exploded in noman's land in the KG's border Chhajja Maan, Ghoda and Goi areas without causing any harm to the fencing and life and property of army. Though army hesitated to make any comment on the incident, official sources confirmed that Pak army fired dozens of mortars Friday night. Some mortars were fired on Saturday night too. Sources said fencing seemed to be their only target as most of the mortars fell and exploded in its close vicinity. Fire tracers, usually fired at night to locate the enemy, were also fired by them. These landed amidst dense forests, which extend on both sides of the Line of Control (LoC), setting them on fire. Over 1.5 km forest stretch was affected by the flames, the sources added. Early Times Report JAMMU, Jan 17: Foiling an infiltration bid on the International Border (IB), a BSF ambush party shot dead a Pakistani intruder near the Chhawni border outpost in the forward Jabowal area of Arnia early this morning. An ambush party of 110 Bn of BSF sighted two intruders in the vicinity of Chhawni outpost when they mounted the earthen bund ahead of fencing towards Pak side at about 2.40 am. The intruders were sighted with the help of night vision devices (NVDs), official sources said. Agencies New Delhi, Jan 17: Army officials in Leh were a part of a meeting convened by the Jammu and Kashmir Government that agreed that China was encroaching into the land with "specific design" to grab a particular area to extend its control till Indus river. Jyoti Basu dead at 95

Agencies Kolkata, Jan 17: Jyoti Basu, one of India's tallest political leaders whose influence extended far beyond his home state of West Bengal that he ruled for a record 23 years, died here on Sunday. He was 95. He would have become India's prime minister in 1996 had not his Marxist-Communist party ruled against his taking charge of a loose Centre-Left alliance.
