| Grid trip hits north India, 10 dead in train collisions | | | |

Jammu, Jan 2: The northern grid tripped early Saturday causing a power blackout in many parts of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Chandigarh and seriously hitting train services in all states of region.
Electricity supply was restored within a few hours in most parts of Punjab and Haryana, the two states where train traffic was the worst affected. While trains to Jammu were badly hit electricity supply could not be restored to most parts of the state.

Srinagar, Jan 2: Cold wave intensified after the mercury dipped to minus 4.8 degrees celsius, three degree below normal, in the Kashmir valley where total power breakdown affected life.
However, the maximum temperature was above normal, giving a bit respite to people from the night-long cold.

Srinagar, Jan 2: The Kashmir valley witnessed major power breakdown since last night, affecting almost every sphere of life.
Though the exact reason for power breakdown was not known officials of Power Development Department posted at main Bemina grid station said there was no fault and no supply was coming from Nothern grid.
No senior PDD official was available for comment. Recently newspapers reported said that Northern Grid had threatened to snap the power supply if Jammu and Kashmir did not pay the balance amount for the power drawn from the grid.

Srinagar, Jan 2: Suspected militants shot and wounded two paramilitary Border Security Force (BSF) troopers Saturday when they were withdrawing cash from an ATM here in Jammu and Kashmir, police said.
A police officer said the attack took place in Soura locality. Both were shot at from close range.
