JAMMU, Nov 18: As the electorate, the saner public opinion, the government and political parties draw confidence from first phase of polling and move toward the subsequent phases more confidently, the surprise turnout of Monday has triggered a debate between ‘Azadi’ and democracy.
Meanwhile, latest compilation of voter count after getting information from poll parties in far and off areas has put the total turnout at 69%. What has left the separatists red faced and mainstreamers springing is the fact two of the three constituencies in Bandipore district have polled more votes than they did in 2002 elections. It adds significance to this overwhelming participation in view of the fact that there was neither this kind of winter chill and nor the blanket boycott call from separatists in 2002 assembly elections.
A day after the ballot has triumphed over the bullet and a huge turnout was witnessed in the Jammu and Kashmir valley during the first phase of elections - mainstream political leaders have welcomed the vote against the 'Azadi' slogan.

JAMMU, Nov 18: The media in Jammu and Kashmir have come under criticism from the Election Commission of India for violating the election coverage guidelines –courtesy: Jammu and Kashmir Government’s Department of Information and Public Relations.
Despite a common understanding and strict guidelines from the Election Commission, the Department of Information clicked hundreds of photographs inside the polling booths with faces of voters clearly visible. JAMMU, Nov 18: After suspending work on a segment in the Kashmir rail link project on finding it unviable, the Railways have now proposed a modified alignment which will see a drastic reduction in cost, length and infrastructure on the section. Amberg Engineering, a Swiss consultancy firm has been assigned to do the feasibility study of the proposed modified Katra-Qazikund alignment, said a senior official in Railway Ministry.
According to the modified alignment, the length of the route has been reduced from 124 km to 70 km and the number of tunnels from 62 to just eight.

NEW DELHI, Nov 18: The government on Tuesday appointed Army's Southern Command chief Lt Gen Noble Thamburaj as the next Army vice chief after incumbent Lt Gen M L Naidu retires from service on December 31.
Lt Gen Thamburaj, the next senior most Lt Gen in the Army, will take over his new appointment from January 1, 2009, when he would move from the Pune-based Southern Command headquarters to the Army headquarters in New Delhi.
