So, voters leave ‘them’ red faced!
Message from Valley: power of democracy is with people
11/18/2008 11:51:16 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 18: As the electorate, the saner public opinion, the government and political parties draw confidence from first phase of polling and move toward the subsequent phases more confidently, the surprise turnout of Monday has triggered a debate between ‘Azadi’ and democracy. Meanwhile, latest compilation of voter count after getting information from poll parties in far and off areas has put the total turnout at 69%. What has left the separatists red faced and mainstreamers springing is the fact two of the three constituencies in Bandipore district have polled more votes than they did in 2002 elections. It adds significance to this overwhelming participation in view of the fact that there was neither this kind of winter chill and nor the blanket boycott call from separatists in 2002 assembly elections. A day after the ballot has triumphed over the bullet and a huge turnout was witnessed in the Jammu and Kashmir valley during the first phase of elections - mainstream political leaders have welcomed the vote against the 'Azadi' slogan. The high turnout ...

11/18/2008 11:50:55 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Nov 18: Electoral battle is tightening up in Rajouri constituency, which is going to polls in the second phase on November 23, but no party is able to gauge its strength in this most keenly contested election. Almost all constituencies of Rajouri district have been stormed by deserters but participation of heavyweights and old war horses has made the contest in Rajouri proper constituency quite interesting. One significant feature of the present elections in Rajouri is rebellion in parties which has come as a blessing in disguise for this caste sensitive constituency. Including Rajouri proper, three constituencies of this district have always seen caste factor...

A nonpartisan developmental review nails populist measures
Governor: keep funds in mind while planning projects
11/18/2008 11:50:09 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 18: Speeches stretching over tens of hours have been made in legislative assembly and thousands of centimeters of publicity space has been occupied by the ‘popular government’ to highlight the mega projects coming up in the Winter Capital City and elsewhere in the region but a nonpartisan review of projects have nailed the populist measures which have been good for rhetoric but are nowhere closer to serve the public utility. At least 16 major buildings which have recently come are lying idle as there is no idea for the funds to make them operational. These buildings had to house various health institutions including the additional blocks at the Government Me...

The Election Commission took a serious note of such coverage which exposes secrecy...
