Jammu, Feb 2: The contest for the Rajya Sabha seats has become interesting with the Congress high command taking a last minute decision of clearing former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad’s name, besides PCC Chief Prof Saif-ud-din Soz.
Meanwhile the Peoples Democratic Party candidate Altaf Hussain Bukhari today filed his nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha but things took an about turn with National Conference-Congress coalition deciding to contest all four seats.
Union minister Saifuddin Soz and former chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad were on Monday made Congress candidate for the Rajya Sabha biennial elections from Jammu and Kashmir. The decision was taken by Congress President Sonia Gandhi, AICC General Secretary Janardan Dwivedi said.
There are four Rajya Sabha seats up for grabs, going to polls on February 13. The Central leadership of the Congress had earlier send feelers on supporting the Peoples Democratic Party on one of the seats but now the coalition is coming with four candidates making the contest intense.

New Delhi, Feb 02: Government on Monday virtually rejected the recommendation of Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswami for removal of his colleague Navin Chawla and hinted at making the Election Commissioner as the next CEC.
Law Minister H R Bhardwaj said the government had a policy to have the senior most Election Commissioner as the CEC and "our policy continues to be the same."
Describing the present controversy as "unfortunate", Bhardwaj said it should not effect Chawla's career as appointments in the Election Commission are based on merit.

New Delhi, Feb 2: Gearing up for the Lok Sabha elections sometime in April-May, the Election Commission has scheduled a series of consultations with leaders of various political parties and poll officials beginning tomorrow.
The Commission would begin the exercise by holding discussions with seven national and 40 state parties on various poll related issues.
The EC will have a day-long review meeting with the Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) of all states and Union Territories on February four to review progress in revision of electoral rolls, the status of photo electoral rolls and distribution of Electors Photo Identity Cards (EPIC).

Jammu, Feb 2: A road widening, which is not coming to an end, has made the Jammu-Panthankote road and its bypass arteries a death knell killing more than 500 people in last five years.
Nearly 5,000 passenger vehicles run on the Highway. The road is not conducive for heavy traffic as sharp curves make driving difficult.

New Delhi, Feb 2: The Prime Minster's Office (PMO) has decided to keep the assets of ministers and their relatives under wraps saying information in this regard is exempted from the Right to Information (RTI) Act.
In a reply to the application of RTI applicant Subhash Chandra Agrawal, the PMO has termed the information as exempt under the Section 8 of the RTI Act and refused to divulge it for the same.
